II am 20 weeks pregnant with twins - two boys. so far pregnancy is going fine. The babies were not planed so initially it came as a shock but now it feels like blessing.
Myself and husband both are international graduate students with limited income so I am trying to save money with baby care and nursery needs.
I don’t know where to start and what to buy for the babies. Can someone give general ideas on baby needs and the best and cheaper way to go about that. I am confused with everything for example buy two basinet or two cribs??? Please help

Hi Jeni...congrats! Even if your boys are unexpected, I'm sure after you ajust a bit, they will be a blessing. However...twins are a tough blessing sometimes! Your right that it will be an expence, but you can curb it a bit. We chose not to go the basinet route, as they are really not in those for too long. They actually shared a crib for the first 3 months...until they started to roll over...I mean we didn't want anyone getting hurt. We also chose cribs that will later turn into toddler daybeds & then the frame can be used for a double bed. This way all we have to do later is buy double mattresses. Now as for car seats...we went the route of the bucket seats & then bought seats that went from 20lbs to 100lb boosters. We only did this because my brother had a baby 1wk after us & my other brother had a baby 1month after us. We figured at family gatherings we would need someplace for them to sit! They are also convenient when they fall asleep in the van & we didn't want to wake them getting in & out. But you could always just buy the 3 in 1 seats that rear face up to 20 or 22lbs then turn around until 40lbs then turn in to boosters until 80-100lbs. In the long run, they are a whole lot less expensive. My advice would be not to buy second hand car seats as it may not be within governament safety standards & you also don't know if it has been in an accident. Your kids safety is worth a couple of extra bucks. Second hand cribs are ok as long as they are no more than 6yrs old. However you'll probably want to buy new mattresses as you can never really get out some yucky stuff that is sure to get on them! There are a lot of second hand kids stores around for clothing & toys, as well as garage sales & closing sales. So keep your eyes & ears open. Never say no to hand me downs. Everything can be washed. Also, later on, never say no to offers to babysit, even if you just go to sleep for an hour. Well...good luck for now. I hope this helps a bit.

Firstly congratulations! My twin boys are almost 3 monts old and the amount of joy they bring us is undescribable! If you are looking for well priced baby gear you may want to try craigslist.org. Search this website for your local area and go to the baby and kids category. You can get tons of great stuff at a fraction of the original price. I got tons of stuff for fabulous prices. Good luck!

I just wanted to mention try to find a freecycle or cheapcycle group in your area, they are a yahoo group. You can ask for things you need on there for free and cheapcycle you can also ask for things and wait to see if anyone has anything to offer. I am having twins and I plan on keeping them together, same cradle/crib. I think they are gonna be used to being with each other. You will need 2 carseats, and again check those 2 areas or even the consignment shops in your area carry them fairly cheap. Congrats and best of luck

The other moms have already given some great advice, but I'd like to add that you shouldn't overlook stores like K-Mart for baby furniture. Not sure how much you're looking to spend, but I got both my cribs there for $135 each and $40 each for the mattresses, and they're great quality. You also don't need to buy them both at the same time since you can try sleeping them in the same crib for a while. We also put our babies in the crib from day 1 and never used a bassinet.

congratulations to you ! where to buy cheap stuff i don't know, but i can tell you that so much of the things that people say you "must have" with a baby (or babies) is unneccessary. all those new gadgets like wipe warmers, sterilizers and special diaper pails are totally uneccessary. to tell you the truth, with all my 6 kids, i never even used a changing table. the bed is just fine for me! my almost 3 month old twins sleep in the same crib still , so 2 cribs is an expense that can wait. if you need any other advice, feel free to ask!

Hi there! I asked around to everyone I knew and was able to borrow playpens, a crib, a highchair, a double stroller and my crew at work bought us 2 carseats for my baby shower. don't be shy about letting everyone know what you need the most. You'll be surprised how willing everyone will be to help you! My twins are 15wks today....sleeping well. Would highly recommend reading "healthy sleep habits, happy child" before they get here....will save your ears from a lot of crying!!!! GOod Luck!!!
