Frequently Asked Questions about Clomid

1. What is Clomid?
Clomid is a fertility drug. Its chemical name is Clomiphene Citrate, and Clomid is sometimes also referred to as Serophene. These are all the same drug. It is used to treat women who have an ovulation problem by stimulating the ovaries to mature an egg.
2. What does Clomid do?
Clomid works by suppressing the amount of naturally circulating estrogen and "tricks" the pituitary into producing more follicular stimulating hormone (FSH) and Luteinizing hormone (LH). These natural gonadotropic hormones (FSH and LH) then stimulate the ovaries to ripen a follicle and to extrude an ovum (egg).
3. When do I take Clomid?
Your physician will instruct you to take Clomid on either days 3-7 or 5-9 of your cycle, and it is usually based upon the Dr's preference and/or experience. Please follow your physician's directions carefully.

4. How much should I take?
The initial recommended dosage is 50 mg but it may be increased to 100 mg (or more) until the desired response is achieved. It is important to chart while taking clomid and some doctors will recommend using Ovulation Predictor Kits (OPKs) as well.

5. When will I ovulate?
It may take time to establish an appropriate and effective dosage for each person. Once that is established, you should expect to ovulate 5-8 days after the last pill is taken. If you do not conceive in that cycle, AF will usually arrive three weeks after the last pill.

6. When should I DTD (have intercourse)?
You should DTD at least every other day, beginning the third day after your last pill is taken and continuing for one week, or until a thermal shift indicates you've ovulated.

7. Are there any side effects from Clomid?
Clomid can interfere with the ability of the cervical mucus glands to be stimulated by estrogen to produce fertile mucus. Only "hostile" or dry cervical mucus may develop in the days preceding ovulation. Robitussin may help to improve the cervical mucus.

The most common side effects are hot flashes due to the body's hormone levels and a mild headache. The headache usually disappears once the last pill is taken, and the hot flashes once ovulation has occurred. Visual symptoms such as spots, flashes or blurry vision are less common and indicate that treatment should stop.

8. What about multiple births as a result from Clomid?
Clomid is a low-level fertility drug. The chances of a multiple birth (twins) increase only by 10% while taking Clomid.

9. What about ovarian cysts? I've heard Clomid can cause them.
Yes, you can get an ovarian cyst while using Clomid. An ovarian cyst will dissipate on its own, though. It is, however, necessary for your ovaries to be checked for cysts before any additional dosages of Clomid are administered. Clomid could cause an enlargement in an ovarian cyst.

10. Is Clomid associated with any congenital birth defects?
The % of congenital birth defects in children conceived with the assistance of Clomid is no different than the % of congenital malformations in the general population.

11. How long will it take for me to get pregnant using Clomid?
More than half the women taking Clomid will get pregnant during the first three cycles and more than 3/4 occur at the 50mg. dose. Most doctors will only prescribe Clomid for six (6) cycles. After that time, other measures may be recommended, such as IUI or IVF

I have Polycystic ovaries and have my period every 4 months or so. have put on Diannette by my doctor for 3 months so that i get a period. on the 3rd month i get my period i have to take clomid for 3 mths. first month 50mg on day 5 and 100mg on 2nd and 3rd month. my mother is a fraternal twin. Although i will be happy to get pregant at all, I am curious to know what the chances of having twins are taking into account these 2 factors? your thoughts?

Have any of you never gotten a second faint line on opk tests? I have been testing with OPK's and I only get one test line with no other line. When I tested a few years ago, I always had atleast two lines, even if one was very light.

Hi there, yes it increases your chances slightly..I also took clomid, with Folistim shots, and Ovidrel HCG trigger shots and had IUI done,.....I am having twins. This time when I conceived i had only two target size follicles..it was a monitored by a Dr. I also conceived my 14 month old son this way. It took three months each time but it worked. I know that clomid along can cause thinning of the linning so then the egg can't implant. Hope that all goes well for you. I was completely shocked and I will be39 when my twins are born and my son will be 17 months.

Sonya - congrats on your twins well worth all the meds. Are you gonna find out what the sex' are?

Multiples Mom - you have no idea what my financial state is. Hate to break it to you, but my dh and I have decided we could afford 4 more children, in addition to the 2 we already have without changing our lifestyle. Preschool is a non issue as it's free for all 4year olds in my state, but even if it wasn't, it's around $100-$300/month depending on the school. Toys - we have plenty of toys already and likely wouldn't even need to buy any new unless we wanted to. If we needed though, not a problem, even if we needed to buy 4 of all of them. We even have college covered. Now probably not years and years of Ivy League schools for all 4 hypothetical children, lol, but at least half of a middle of the road college for all 4, in addition to our other 2. Your right in that I have no idea what it's like to care for multiples, but my other 2 are very close in age (16 months) so I DO have some idea of what it will be like. Plenty of people have twins and find a way to manage and I will too. I am very fortunate to have a lot of family help and friends too if I need it.

NOTYOMOMMA*** "samehere" i saying that you are talking to no one..... no body posts on this thread anymore so you kinda sound crazy.... sitting here all by yourself. Go pick a fight somewhere else.

notyomama - January 25th, 2008 3:06 PM

Not picking a fight with anyone. You all apparently have never heard of a bump I take it?

samehere - January 25th, 2008 4:18 PM

A bump is one thing, you were addressing someone. To bump a thread, you just put "bump", you don't start saying that such and such doesn't know you and your situation when they haven't been on here for over 2 years. There is the difference. Just trying to help but forget it. Go ahead and dig up some more old posts and start telling them how they don't know you. At least it will be entertaining.

Mmkay, will do:) *rolleyes*

Hey everyone.... I conceived twins naturally but I ovulate irregularly and may need to take Clomid in the future. In the past 6 months, I ovulated only twice. Since I already had twins naturally, would my chances be higher if I took Clomid? My doctor doesn't seem to think so, but I think I will wait another 6 months before I seriously consider taking any drugs. I'm afraid I will end up with more than two if I take anything and I wouldn't mind twins again but I don't want to take unnecessary risk. My twins were born 7 weeks early and spent 6 wks in the NICU... do not want to repeat that.

sphinx - January 25th, 2008 4:57 PM

1 more thing... it took a year of trying to conceive the twins, thats why I want to wait. I think if I give it a year of trying, I might get pg again. If not, then I will consider drugs.

esmeraldausiahon - January 30th, 2008 11:29 AM

hi i am new here, but i am 24, mom of 3 and would love to have twins, i am ovulating but very irregular, sometimes my cycles are 30 days sometimes 45 days.
So today i started to take fertomid 50 mg, the same as clomid, hoping for twins.
I have seen a gyneacologist and told her i want to conceive, but they refused to help me as i have been trying for 9 months, without success.
I now found out that you can get it without prescription, online, so i got it, and hopefully it wil make me pregnant with twins.
