crazy beater comments - September 25th, 2005 3:48 PM

I read this forum often because dh and I are TTC and he's an identical twin, twins run in our family, and I've been curious about twin pregnancies etc. The posts have been interesting and informative, but I have to make 1 comment in reference to woman and their "christian" talk.
Where in the Bible does it say "women should use modern 21st century medicine to make babies?"
You have science to thank.

Yas2000... now I am confused. Because of your advanced maternal age, it is especially important that you discuss the use of Clomid with your doctor ( because of the huge jump in possible complications, etc), and also... your unprescribed use makes even less sense!!! Advanced Maternal Age automatically qualifies you for many fertility treatments. Getting Clomid prescribed shouldn't be any problem at all!!! Why is it you insist on doing this the illegal/unsafe way when doing it safely and legally is yours for the taking???

YAS2000 - Not really sure what the Hurricane has to do with this at all....

YAS2000 - September 26th, 2005 4:55 AM

DON'T WORRY...ABOUT THE HURRICANE BIT..IF YOU DIDNT GET IT THE FIRST TIME TOU WONT GET IT NOW....WHERE I LIVE LAWS ARE QUITE STRICT ABOUT PRECRIBING MEDICATION...ALSO I AM UNLUCKY I DONT HAVE A VERY KEEN DOCTORE...IF I HAD A DOCTOR WHO WAS INTERESTED IN BEING COMPLETELY HELPFUL..I WOULD GET IT PRECRIBED BUT I DON'T...I COULD CHOOSE TO GO TO A FERTILITY CLINIC AND DO IT PRIVATELY BUT THEN AGAIN I DONT WANT TO SPEND 1000'S JUST TO BE ABLE TO TAKE THE C PILL..I HAVE STARTED MY FIRST ROUND NOW AND AM QUITE PLEASED...THINGS ARE NORMAL..NO SIDE EFFECTS AS SUCH...AM STICKING TO 50MG AND THATS THATS...I WILL DO IT FOR 2 CYCLES AND IF NOTHING COMES OF IT I WILL STOP..BECAUSE AFTER ALL THE HOO HA..IF 50MG DOES NOT WORK ON ME THEN SO WON'T ANY MORE WITHOUT ME RUNNING THE RISK OF SERIOUSLY PUTTING MYSELF INTO DANGER...(REMEMBER I HAVE TOLD YOU I HAVE DONE MY RESEARCH!!)...I STILL STRONGLY OPPOSE PEOPLE WHO CONDEM OTHERS FOR DOING IT THAT WAY...I WILL ALWYAS BE SUPPOPRTIVE AND WILL ALWAYS SAY IF YOUR GOING TO TAKE THE RISK YOU SHOULD KNOW ALL THE CONCEQUENCS AND HAVE TO DEAL WITH WHATEVER GOES WRONG...HOWEVER I WILL BE THERE TO CHEER UP AND ON AND HOPE FOR THE BEST...FOR THOSE WHO HAVE MADE UP THEIR MINDS...AND I ALWAYS SAY IF IN DOUBT DON'T EVEN BEGIN DOWN THAT JOURNEY!

Sorry but this quack knows nothing of what she speaks of. Clomid will only increase a woman's odd of twins from the normal 1.2% to somewhere in the range of 5-10%. It has no influence on higher order multiples. And the costs of most higher-order multiples are covered by private insurance (and childhood leukemia costs them far more than h.o. multiples anyway), publicity donations and donated services. None of which has anything to do with a desire to have twins which many women share.
As for YAS, at 35 she is not in the 'advanced maternal age' category. In fact, she's increasingly average and not a primagravida so not part of those statistics. After age 40 Clomid seems (studies still being done) to become less effective in *some* women. Perimenopause begins asymptomatically so a woman may, after 40, be beginning her fertility decline without knowing it and in those cases the body would be used to the suppressed estrogen and wouldn't respond to Clomid's actions. By no means is this to say that all women over 40 are in that boat, only that a doctor would, to save money, time and effort for all parties, be wise to do some basic hormone checks for perimenopause before treating with Clomid. At 35, unless you have a family history of early menopause, there's no reason to even think of such things.
Medical terms should not be tossed around by people whose education consists entirely of Google. It is the cliff notes of human biology and medicine.
Also, as a pharma let me tell you all that there is no plan to further restrict Clomid, it's classification is not changed to reflect use or abuse any more than any other drug, only it's risk rating and prescribed usage. That's just scare-mongering, a trick of the ignorant but passionate.

Take the rantings with a grain of salt...they're worth only slightly less than that anyway ;o)

And I'm in the UK with my four lovely drug-free birthed children and won't cost anyone in the US a penny either. It's grand. Matter of fact, I give money to the US by ordering some of my medicines from there LOL....now if only they'd use it to devise a basic coverage of health care for all and stop standing on their little health-elite soapboxes ;o)

yas2000 - September 26th, 2005 2:34 PM

hi liza,
thanks for your detailed and insightful imput....gosh its nice to see someone here knows what they are talking about....
now dont get me wrong...i know its waggle the finger kind of situation when woman suddenly decides to order drugs they know they cannot get prescribed..i am from the uk too...and i know that clomid does not really enhance the chances of multiples either...but some woman have done it and succeeded and i like many others want to give myself that go and chance (sinc ein my opinion its not really too big a deal...i am not having ivf!!!)...its naughty and silly...you might say but i made the decision and i hope unlike others here you can accept that for me...
now to get to the clomid...i am going to start 50mg...i have read tons and tons of stuff on it and was wondering if you dont mind saying what the chemical implications will be...what would the warning signals be???suppose i were to get pregnant after clomid...is there a a way doctors can diagnose that i have taken it???esp if i end up with triplets (which i think will be highly unlikely for some reason)...
so being a pharmacist...what do you suggest???apart from not doing it...you can imagine if i mention this to the docs can i just try clomid once just to enhance my chances of multiples i would get the dismissive response which ultimately means never!!!
but i want to try...and i only will try for 2 months 50mg no more...
what are the major risk factors...i have normal fertility...had 2 kids before...i know its silly the whole thing but am willing to give it a shot and hope i get lucky!!lol

mama-bean - September 26th, 2005 2:36 PM

Once again, maybe this is a cultural difference? Here in the US, the classification of Advanced Maternal Age is the age 35 and older... that is readily available information to anyone who bothers to look it up. And I'll say for the last time... I am not against the use of Clomid, only the ILLEGAL use of an UNPRESCRIBED drug. Because this is currently so readily available on the net, women who have no business taking it are geting it. Teens who think twins would be fun. Women trapping their husbands/boyfriends. It is not at all difficult to get Clomid prescribed. Your doc does a work up to make sure it is somewhat safe for you to take, and prescribes you a few doses. You pay your $30 at the pharmacy ( that is full price here.. not covered by insurance) and go on your merry little way. If your doc refuses to prescribe, then either find a new doc or consider your reasons for wanting it in the first place, and his reasons for refusing to prescribe. I have to point out, Liza, that there are several widely publicised (sp?) cases here in the US of women with quads, quints, etc that are ALL the result of unprescribed Clomid use. When you stimulate a non-functional, etc, ovary you get 1, maybe 2 eggs. When you stimulate an already fully functional ovary you can get 2, 3, 4 ,or more eggs. Once again, this is all information that is readily available, either through a conversation with your doctor, or through independent research. I'm not against wanting multiples, pur-sae, It is the wanton abandon of all rational thought and the embracement of illegal, potentially harmful practices in order to conceive multiples that bugs me. It SHOULD bug everyone. NEVER is an illegal thing a good thing, especially when there are so many safe, legal, herbal options out there.

yas2000 - September 26th, 2005 2:41 PM

oh..i have taken 2 pills already...not feeling any side effects as such.....so i assume i am ok....lol
just wanted to get a pharmacist point of view!!!

mama-bean - September 26th, 2005 2:52 PM

well, Yas2000, I hope everything turns out OK for you. Please see your doctor at the first sign that something isn't normal, and please be honest with him concerning your drug use. Good Luck.

Michelle - September 26th, 2005 3:34 PM

Mama-Bean, I ovulate normally but my RE prescribed clomid to thicken my endometrium due to reccurent miscarriage. When I mentioned my concern about multiples, he told me that the REAEASE of multiple eggs is very rare due to clomid. Yes, it happens but ovulating normally doesn't really mean much. Several follicles may mature (perhaps more than in a woman who does not ovulate regularly) only one is likely to become dominant and release it's egg. He is not concerned about multiples.

mama-bean - September 26th, 2005 3:50 PM

Hmmmm... well that is very different from my experience! When I was on Clomid, 1st cycle I produced 3 mature eggs, and 2nd cycle I produced 2. 3rd cycle was a bust as I had 7 eggs, all released, but none mature. 4th cycle, one mature egg, who is now my daughter. I had pretty close monitoring throughout, and was diagnosed infertile due to my not ovulating.

Melissa - September 26th, 2005 5:45 PM

Hi,
I'm not juging anyone because I would love twins aswell but I am on chlomid because I don't ovulate and have Pcos. I asked the doctor why ovarian cancer can be caused by chlomid - he said it's caused by hyperstimulation of the ovaries and the more you ovulate the higher the risk. So since I don't ovulate on my own - I have low risk. But women who ovulate and take chlomid have a really high risk of ovarian cancer and hyperstimulation. Thought I'd mention the risks before you ladies make your own decisions ;)

Marina - September 27th, 2005 2:01 PM

Hi, Ladies, it's great to see so many of us on the same boat together. I have a quick question. Is there anything else we should take after taking clomid? because Clomid can thicken the body fluid which would make the traveling very difficult for sperms. I asked my Dr. and he says just clomid would be fine. ( I have very irregular period cycles thus Dr. prescribed Clomid)

I also want an answer and according to the dr monitoring me there is a 10% chance of having twins and it is up to God as to whether you do or not.Chances increase if twins in the family.Hope it helps.
