Tiffany, I thought you might want to educate yourself if you decide to come back to the boards. And after reading this I hope you'll admit you were wrong and apologize to tripletmom.

Premature birth is difficult to prevent because the causes are so complex and varied. It can be caused by abnormalities in the uterus or cervix, for example, or by pre-existing health problems in the mother, such as diabetes, hypertension or obesity.

Blood clotting disorders are increasingly viewed as a major contributor to preterm birth. And as many as 30 percent of cases may be due to infections such as sexually transmitted diseases, urinary tract infections, even gum disease. Infections and inflammation appear to trigger a cascade of physiological changes resulting in labor.

Some women may carry genes that make them vulnerable to preterm birth, says Nancy S. Green, medical director of the March of Dimes.

Health insurance companies, moreover, rarely pay for a preconception visit to check a woman's health before she becomes pregnant or a prenatal visit before the 10th to 12th week of pregnancy -- both measures that could potentially prevent death and disability and save millions of dollars, Green says.

"We don't do prevention very well in this country. And mediocre prevention efforts probably impact preterm birth," she says.

Some experts contend that U.S. obstetricians -- particularly those involved in assisted reproductive technologies -- should do more to avoid multiple births, which are often preterm. Leaders in the infertility treatment field agree. Last year, the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, composed of doctors who treat infertility, enacted voluntary guidelines to limit the number of embryos transferred during in vitro fertilization to as few as one or two in healthy younger women.

to FYI - thanks for providing some "facts" to Ms. Tiffany - not that I think that she would take the time to read them. Interesting statistics (I personally did not concieve via IVF, but I would agree w/new guidlines limiting # of implanted embryos)

mama-beans - December 21st, 2005 11:09 PM

The only problem with the embryo limiting... I amf riends with SEVERAL ladies that underwent IVF SEVEERAL times... Each time at least 2 embryos. Only one of them so far has conceived, after 4 previous IVF transfers.. this time they transferred 5 embryos... and she is pregnant with one beautiful little boy. Had they continued to only transfer one or two... a big chance she still wouldn't be pregnant. It is a slippery slope.

I just wanted to tell y'all that I know a gal who gave birth prematurely due to an infection caused by her amnio. I think premature birth is more common with multiples, but the care available for such situations is so awesome now!! Tripletmom, I am really in awe! I had a hard time with one! Good for you!

TripletMom - December 22nd, 2005 8:21 AM

Having triplets definitely reinforces the need for order and schedule in my life. THanks Frances - I am sure having 1 baby can be just as difficult at times.

yetanothertripletmom - December 22nd, 2005 8:30 AM

Thank you for providing some facts. Hopefully Tiffany will grow up and do a little research. I'm sure not holding my breath for an apology!

bump

Tiffany - January 8th, 2006 3:27 PM

uhm, I had two premies so the point of my statements was to let you know that terrible things can happen with or without p or u/p clomid. Or, even with out any fertility drugs at all. Get with it.

onetwothree - January 8th, 2006 3:29 PM

Tiffany, for some reason there is someone bumping up old posts. I think it is just to get arguements going.

Anne - January 8th, 2006 5:27 PM

LMAO..... Get her FYI

Frances - January 8th, 2006 6:03 PM

Sorry, just wanted to say to Tripletmom if you are still here, that is so sweet! I did have a bit of a hard one with ds, he did some strange things! Had colic for 6 months, got his first teeth at for and a half months, had issues with his circumcision and so on. I think it was harder too as I had a 4 day labor followed by a c-section so when we did get home, I was soooo tired. Then when you add postpartum depression, well it was a little crazy for a while. I was very blessed to have a great support system from my family. When we've had hard times with our babies everyone steps up to help and support. I hope all of us have such great help!! Thanks for all the info from everyone on prematurity. I didn't realize how scary it could be, and since multiples run in my family it is good stuff to know!!

Trina - January 8th, 2006 6:54 PM

Frances- Your experience sounded so much like my first except I was given a full episiotomy and forceps and my poor baby boy was ripped out even if he wasnt supposed to fit. What followed was alot of pain, depression and hard times with an extremely unsettled and colically baby.I felt like a failure even though deep down I knew ,that had the birth had been different I may not have had to deal with some of what followed. Just wanted to let you know that I know how you feel and I think we are amazing just to have gotten through that. My son is 7 now and just divine but Im not sure I will ever forget how tough those first 12 months were!

TripletMom - January 8th, 2006 7:23 PM

to TIffany - not to dredge up the past, but FYI was just referring to the post wherein you blamed me for the premature birth of my babies. If you truly had preemies, it is unbelievable that you would post something as hurtful as you did, but oh well.
Frances - good luck! And if you happen to get pregnant w/multiples just be as informed as you can and take care!!!

Frances - January 8th, 2006 8:24 PM

Thanks tripletmom and trina, I'd be happy with a healthy one but I'd be ecstatic with one that doesn't cry all the time LOL!! I honestly don't know if I could do multiples, it sounds sooo hard! Although I guess you don't know what you can do until you're there. My nephew was premie and my sister had to drive to the nicu to nurse every two hours when she was released after her c-section. She said it was the hardest time of her life. I just read a woman's story who had to have a c-section prematurely because eclampsia caused her to have a stroke. Can you imagine??? I may have had a hard time but it could have been so much worse, and for my blessings I am thankful!! My son is 4 now and he is everything I ever could have hoped for! If you'd like to take a look, http://franclan.piczo.com and if it posts it with dashes, leave those out!

TripletMom - January 8th, 2006 8:38 PM

Very cute!!! Like you posted - you never know what you can handle until you are faced with a challenge. Honestly, having my trio hasn't been TOO bad. I mean I have some crazy days, but I have learned to handle the stresses - if I had one I wouldn't know what to do with myself!! LOL

Tiffany - January 8th, 2006 8:48 PM

This is going to be the last time I explain this. Many of the women I know that I have had come to this site think I am crazy for even speaking to some of you but, I want to clear this up. The reason I was tearing into triplet or whoever was to prove a point. The point is that premature labor can happen with clomid, upclomid, naturally or whatever. It was to try and show you that it can happen for whatever reason, so it's stupid to go on and on nagging about u/p clomid and the risk of premature labor and mults. I really could care less if you don't believe that my two daughters were premies. Both 6 weeks early. The first time my water broke and the second my heart condition was getting bad so after a month in the hospital the dr decided to take her. Both were in the nicu, both had iv's in their head. Both were small, but, they did well and that's that. I never took any kind fo fertility drugs it was just the circumstances. So, thanks for the information on premies but, I think I get it. When will you understand that you can help so many more women and younger women if you approach this in a different way???? Give the information, tell your story but, be kind. That way they, just might listen to you. I still don't get why you all have such a problem agreeing to disagree??? This is a free country and we are all allowed to have our own views and opinions. Why can't you be okay with that? I honestly give up, it's such a waste it's not even funny.

TripletMom - January 8th, 2006 8:54 PM

Once again Tiffany - I am not discussing u/p clomid here. The comments you made about me were personal regarding the premature birth of my kids. Within your post you were not posting any other info. You did sort of apologize under a different thread - and I never really took it personally because I know you from a hole in the wall so I dont care what you think. Let's keep it real because we are keeping it real.
