I CANNOT believe some of the postings, I am an RN and I have PCOS and am on metformin, My Endocrinologist recommended that I try Clomid if I don't get pregnant in 1 year. He also recommended that I try for multiples b/c I will have to remove my ovaries as soon as I give birth, so I have 1 "shot" for having a family. So I am also excited about the possibility of twins, but I would NEVER take any prescription medicine without medical advise. Clomid is a drug with real side effects and is used to treat women with real problems conceiving, not for women to pick and chose how many babies she wants to have. It makes me sick to think that women that can conceive naturally purchase this drug without a prescription just so they can have twins or triplets. Unless you have an MD after your name, leave the prescribing and diagnosing to your doctors, if not for your own health but for the health of your unborn babies. Multiple births increase a mother's risk for many pre and post pregnancy complications, not to mention uterine rupture and extensive lacerations, but multiple births also increase the chance that your baby will be born prematurely. To all women considering purchasing Clomid illegally, DONT, consult your physician first

Hey one other variable to consider which has been documented in a few medical studies. The woman's age at conception.
Older women tend to have a higher chance of multiples.

yas2000.... get a grip. If you choose to take a drug illegally, despite the facts shown to you encouraging otherwise, then go ahead. Don't jump in and try to stop others from gathering all info that is available so that they can make a SMART choice. These comments aren't judgment, they are fact. A poster above wanted to know if taking unprescribed Clomid is illegal.... YEP! Sure is!

yas2000 - October 2nd, 2005 6:31 PM

YEP!!!...sure it is NOT!!!!!!!!!!

... - October 9th, 2005 3:06 PM

It is NOT legal. You can obtain many things on the internet and it not be legal. It is just harder to catch people. There is fraud, theft, drugs, pedophilia, bestiality, etc. All of these are illegal yet on the internet. Don't think something being easy access means safe, legal or smart.

twins4us - October 10th, 2005 5:11 PM

yas..it IS illegal. Just because you can buy prescription drugs via the internet doesn't mean it is legal. YOu can buy just about anythign on the net...doesn't make it legal. You are deluding yourself. The fact is the abuse of prescribed drugs is out of control in the US due to internet orders WITHOUT prescription. People order Oxycotin with no problems. So YES it is illegal to buy drugs w/o a prescription.

As far as being ignorant...nope we are stating fact. Yes we are being judgemental because we are shocked their are irresponsible people like yourself taken illegal drugs simple because you want twins. To me that is reprehensible. How will you live with yourself if you conceive mutliples and at 20wks or so you lose one or both. You conceived a child your body wasn't meant to have and lost it to all the complications....basically that child bore the brunt of your GREEDY and SELFISHINESS.

Get a grip...we have a right to inform. You may turn your eyes from the complications but others may want to know the whole truth not just the ones that satisfy their agenda.

yas2000 - October 10th, 2005 5:53 PM

i have not stopped anyone from advising....i am open to knowledge-what i am not open to is judgement....and that in a very direct and unsensititve manner...which is exactly what you are doing...and how ignorant to say i conceived child my body didnt mean to have???becasue i took clomid...lol...there is no concrete evidence that clomid causes miscarriage that late in pregnancy...early preg yes, maybe since your body has to get used to the hightened 'unnatural' way of increase of speicif hormones but not that late...m/c at 20w of multiples can happen to even the naturally concieved...also...m/c is more likely to happen in women who have fertiltiy problems due to the varied and inconsistant hormone levels...a fertile woman has a higher chance of having a successful pregnancy and hence clomid is not going to effect her chances of m/c as much as it might do in a woman who has problems with her hormones form the start...becasue it is 'not used' something being suddenly in abundance!!!nevertheless....its my (our) choice...i repsect you wouldn't do it please respect thati would and have done like so many already!!!

to yas - October 11th, 2005 12:12 AM

Actually there IS evidence that clomid does something to the lining of your uterus making in inhospitable...that is why more ladies m/c while using it... than those who conceive spontaneously. And it can interfere with conception in general because it drys up your cervical fluid and can shorten your luteal phase.

m
http://www.earlypath.com/faqs/clomid.html

Your chance of a m/c with multiples is MUCH higher. Your risk with a singleton goes down after the 1st tri but ... The risk of pregnancy loss w/ multiples is increased in later trimesters as well. There can be so many complications with fluids, fetal growth, placenta problems. I never differeniated between clomid and spontaneously twins...I made the remark "why would you put yourself at risk if you didn't have to". Those who conceived spontaneously had no choice if they wanted a child, but you do. I also never said m/c late in pg is caused by clomid. Just that your chances of m/c goes up with multiples.

Uh...yeah clomid stimulates your ovaries so you drop more than one egg...I'd say that your body didn't do it naturally so yeah it wasn't meant to happen spontaneously. If it were, you wouldn't need the clomid. Ignorant...nope, methinks you are the one deluding yourself.

You say that it is okay cause Dr. prescribe it for ladies. Those ladies HAVE no choice as they can not conceive on their own...YOU can. It is like having dangerous surgery to your body just because you can....

You need to do your reseach on multiple pg as you are incredibly naive. I would think someone who has had major complications both during pg and other, would steer away from multiples as twin will excerbate any preexisting problems you have. I would bet your Dr. would be appalled at your actions. YOu are awfully cavalier with your health and health of your future child.

Yes you will be monitored closely and treated the same as anyone else pg with multiples but that doesn't mean complications won't arise. Those who disagree can not fathom why someone would put themselves, their spouses, family and an innocent child thru that if they don't have to. Did you also know that the divorce rate is high among parents of multiples. Doesn't sound as if you have good communication to start with as you are willing to lie to your dh about clomid. It is sad that you are willing to risk your child and yourself to these:

Complications of the Fetus and Newborn with Multiple Gestation• Preterm birth occurs in over 50% of twin pregnancies, 90% of triplet pregnancies, and virtually all quadruplet pregnancies.• Compared to singleton pregnancies, a twin is seven times more likely and a triplet is over 20 times more likely to die in the first month of life.• Prematurity is associated with an increased risk of respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), intra-cranial hemorrhage, cerebral palsy, blindness, low birth weight, and neonatal morbidity and mortality. RDS accounts for 50% of all neonatal deaths associated with premature birth.• Intrauterine growth restriction, intrauterine death of one or more fetuses, miscarriage, and congenital anomalies are all more common.• Lifelong disability is over 25% for babies weighing less than 1,000 grams (2 lbs., 3 oz

Maternal Complications Associated with Multiple Gestation• Preeclampsia, also called pregnancy-induced hypertension, occurs three to five times more frequently.Severe preeclampsia may be life threatening.• Premature labor requiring prolonged bed rest or hospitalization is common. • Placental abnormalities associated with maternal hemorrhage are more likely to occur.• Gestational diabetes, anemia, and polyhydramnios (excess amniotic fluid) occur more frequently.• Cesarean section is often needed for twin pregnancies and almost always required for triplets.

I can't respect your choice just like I can't respect the heroin or meth user on the street corner. You are abusing yourself and putting your potential children at risk just so you can have twins. YOu just don't get that twins are risky no matter how they come about.

Those who are contemplating clomid you might want to check out this link:

Since
50% of twins are born before 36 weeks you might want to check out this chart. Preemies are NOT pretty...it is so hard as a parent:

and btw YAS what happened to last month's pg that you posted on the babycenter board? Never heard the details, only that it might be a molar pg due to high hcg's and you were going in for an u/s.

mama-beans - October 11th, 2005 1:49 AM

thats ok...

initially i was getting quite annoyed with people telling me all this stuff...but everyone has an opinion and we should all respect each others....we think differently and we have different view on stuff...the lady who used my last posts to 'expand' on what she feels i said and how i said it....to be honest i didnt even bother reading any of it..gosh she must have had time on her hands...ellaborating....lol!!

its pointless...cause only people like me will understand what i am going through....just as only people like you will understand your strong opinions and your objections...
i have learnt in the last week to take things lighlty....so i won't let anyones post get to me...its my decidion, my body, my choice...
in the end whatever happens if i do get twins due to clomid...you may not be aware of it...but i do get the same care and options than anyone else will do in my shoes...it doesnt make me so different to them...(yes...you say...because i choose to put myself in that situation)...to me thats still utter palava..because how can your twins/kids be less precious than mine????woman who have fertiltiy problems constantly risk their health and that of their unborn children trying to fulfil their dream to bear a healthy child....so really..don't even go down that route!!!
as for everyone here...

i am preg and my hcg levels are very high...doc is booked me for a scan because i have started bleeding cd 18...am now cd21....this is a natural pregnancy...i just came of bc pills so he said it might have had caused me to overstimulate because i suddenly came off them mid pack!!!
although my hcg levels are very high only a u/s will tell...all i can do is wait an see...its booked for next week!!!
my ms is horrendous and i have gained 8lbin the last week!!!

i might have a threatened abortion and this pregnancy might be considerd a chemical pregnancy...if the bleeding doesnt stop so i am not getting too excited!!!!i will have to wait an see...i am neither sad nor happy...probably just normal....its happened before and this is soo early...although its a life just about to be created there is no heart beating yet,no limbs formed..if i have a mc i'd rather it happen sooner than later...

if i find out it was twins i would like to say my intiution was right all along....lol...

but it doesnt matter....i am quite content with my life right now....so this is no big a deal for me as i was waiting ttc next month....

anwyay,
take care and good luck with your pregnancies...baby dust to all....
