Sarah, everyone's body dialtes and effaces at different rates, and that can even change by pregnancy, i was not dialted at all the day before my oldest daughter was born, but with my last child (number four) I was dilated to 3 cm for more than a month. if you have any female blood relatives (sisters or mom work best) who have children ask them what their experience was like, when they started dilating, how long it took from then until active labor etc.. they are a pretty good marker of what to expect. I wish I could give you a better answer but any answer is better then none.
