I also rented a fetal doppler. It can be tricky at first to find the heartbeat, but start very low, near your pubic bone, use plenty of gel, and move the wand in very small increments....just tilting it can make a big difference. You can not mistake your heartbeat for the baby's because it will be at least twice as fast as yours. Feel your pulse at your throat to get an idea of your rate, and you will definitely know when you hear the baby. I agree with Ashley that it sounds like horses galloping or sometime a little toy train chugging along. It may help to have someone else try to use the doppler while you lie back and relax.
