Conspicuous Pumping Anyone Else

I just returned to work and everyone has been really sweet and excited to see me. I work in a small family owned auto and tire service center where everyone is pretty close. But the thing is that I am the only female employee. I have a place to pump my breatmilk, and no one has made a big deal out of it, but for some reason I am super paranoid about it. The walls are fairly thin and I can hear everything going on outside, so I feel like they can all hear me pumping. And I'm really weirded out about keeping my milk in the fridge next to the lunches of a bunch of old mechanics. I know I have every right to pump at work, and I'm glad to be able to help my baby grow even though I have to work, but this is driving me crazy!! Anybody else feel weird about pumping at work?

Oh Ginny too funny. I work with all men too! I work in a small police dept and I use my boss's office to pump and I've asked the day officer if he can hear me pumping. He can't. I even try to zip up the pump a little to block out the sound. He's always giving me c___p about it but we tease each other all the time and I don't care anymore. I joke and walk out the door and say, 10 oz today!!!! Ha ha! He calls me Bessie sometimes. But he's my age and we joke about everything. But I still get weird when I hear people outside even though the door locks from the inside. I turn on the tv and watch Family Feud every day while I pump. I've been doing it for two months now and I'm to the point where I could care less if they hear me pumping. I just joke about it anyway instead of being paranoid. I don't want to be stressed while pumping. I just try to find the humor in it all. Don't you have a cooler compartment in your pump bag? I do but I've forgotten to put the cooler packs in it and had to leave my milk in our fridge and I just put it in a bag and hide it in the door or something. Don't worry about it. They'd probably never say anything to you about it. They'd be more embara__sed about it than you are. That's how guys are, unless you work where I do. We're always joking about stuff but I'm fine with that and they wouldn't do it if it were someone new in here etc.

I design trusses-those pointy things on top of your house. I'm one of 4 women. I use the ladies room and put a blanket over myself. I would prefer not to pump while someone is pooping. As far as I can tell, they would prefer not to poop when I'm pumping-so it all works out. I just store my milk in a lunch bag in the fridge. No one would think there wasn't a PB & J in there

Gwenn, what state are you in? In MN our employers have to offer us a place to pump other than a bathroom. That sucks.

ginny - i too hate pumping at work. our lactation room is right off a main stairwell to the conference room and kitchen area. so everyone hears the motor running and i hear everyone - and usually people stop right by the door to stop and chat with one another and i'm just thinking - hey - can't you hear me PUMPING in here? give me some space!!! but as far as the fridge goes, i too am an only lady employee in an office full of men, and i didn't want to stash my milk in the fridge, so i went out and bought a mini fridge (like $20) at target that holds 6 cans of soda. i plug it in under my desk and keep the milk in there. it's really quite cute. maybe that's an idea - those things stay nice and cold!

I'm waiting for someone to stand outside my door and be like, what's that noise!?!!??!

The pumps do make alot of noise! God...I hope no one ever thought I was in the bathroom with a vibrator! Serious now, I too was always paranoid..mostly bc pumping takes time away from your desk and I was always worried others would be thinking...oh..there she goes again...although I am sure no one really noticed or cared for that matter.

Heidi - March 17

I think that too Hannah and that's kind of why I only pump once while at work.

I work in Iowa, your wonderful neighbor to the south! :) Our bathroom really isn't too bad. There are 2 comfy chairs in a seperate room, and it's not next to any major traffic patterns so it's pretty private. The ladies know my schedule so they either come in to chat, or just avoid the room for 15 minutes or so. I do feel bad about all the men I work with (about 30). I'm afraid they are going to think I'm a slacker. Also, in an emergency, I''ve had to use their facility. It's a good thing it's a s***hole because it's a real s***hole.

I'm so glad it's not just me! It's kinda funny that soon after I posted, I had to go pump - so I got my pump bag and headed to the back. I mumbled that I was taking a milk break and my boss said, "What?" and so i repeated myself, and he said, "What?" and so I stopped dea, held up my pump and said clearly, "I need a MILK break!" And then the light went on and he said, "Oh, you're going to pump!" Up until then I wonder if he knew what I was doing back there! And Heidi, you're right, I think the guys are more embarra__sed than I am. But they still stand outside the door chatting. They are always betting on sports(right now it's basketball) and they keep the betting sheets poted on the wall outside where I pump, so most the time I sit there pumping listening to whose on top, who has the best spread and all this other stuff that I never knew about before. If I ever quit this job I could move on to become a bookie!

Ha ha! Milk break! I'm gonna use that one next time! Ha ha! I love the look on my co-worker's face. My boss just gets all red and says, go ahead, I'll leave for a while. Hee hee! I watch Family Feud while I pump. Helps drown out the noise. I also sometimes throw the cover over my pump to keep the noise down but most days I could care less. Ha ha!

Ginny - March 20

Family Feud! I watched a TON of that during maternity leave! She always seemed to be asleep when it came on, so I have become pretty snappy. I used to get so frustrated with people's answers that were OBVIOUSLY off the wall, and I'd yell at the TV. "Name a word that rhymes with brain." "man." What?!?

Heidi - March 20

Ha ha! Yep today it was "Name the top five most common names for men that start with the letter C". One guy said Chandler. Oh please! Yeah that's right up there with Charles ya idiot! I sit in there and giggle. I have the closed caption on most of the time so nobody thinks I'm just in there watching TV.
