Hi, we are in Singapore. My wife has recently become pregnant and she had seen the Obs/Gyn at 7-week. The Obs/Gyn has prescibed to her 5mg folic acid pills to be taken one tablet daily. 5mg of folic acid per day ??? I have read from the internet that the daily dose is recommended to be not more than 1000 mcg or 1mg. But... I have checked around here and it seemed to be quite a usual practice in Singapore for Obs/Gyn to prescribe 5mg folic acid tablet to pregnant woman ??? How about over in America or your country ?? Is that a usual dosage of folic acid ( 5mg per day ) prescribe by Obs/Gyn to just pregnant woman ??? I just wonder if there is any side effects if one is overdosed with folic acid ??

Well I wasn't prescribed it but I bought it over the counter with this pregnancy as well as my last - the more folic acid the better to prevent neural tube defects - if you can't find a smaller dose have her cut the pills in half - I am not thinking that it is harmful in anyway since salad and other green leafy veggies also have folic acid so I am sure we get plenty each day! Don't worry - I am sure it's fine

aeioulim - I live in Greece and my doctor gave me 5mg of folic acid to take every day immediately confirming my pregnancy. Most of my friends who have been pregnant here have also been prescribed 5mg.
