Hi Ladies...Well next week is my first "real" prenatal appointment, and I'm just wondering what I can expect. i already went in at 5 weeks because I was having cramps and they did an u/s to make sure everything was ok, and it was! :) I talked to my nurse today and she said I will not be getting another u/s and i'm VERY disappointed...so what can i expect?? will they at least listen for the heartbeat? I neeeeed to know that my baby is ok!!

hey yvette, i would like to know this also. i went to the dr at about 4 weeks (to confirm pregnancy and date it) then i went back at 5 weeks (to get my bloodtest results) then i had an ultrasound at what was supposed to be 7 weeks but they told me i looked only to be 6w1d. and i was told to go back to dr at 10 weeks. just wondering also what this is for and what should be expected?????

Yvette, many places are different on what they do at that first appointment.( I had already had my blood taken at 6 weeks in the emergency room because I was having stomach pains) At mine they took my family history, talked to me about having a healthy pregnancy, took blood pressure and temperature, felt size of uterus, (they offered me an ultrasound but I said no), and listened for the heartbeat. We heard it first try, 160 bpm! But she warned us that there is only a 50% chance of hearing it then (depending on weight, chance, position of uterus, among other things). And A LOT of dooctors won't even look for the heartbeat that early, so don't be disappointed if they don't try, they'll get it next time. They didn't take blood or urine at my first appointment although some doctors might. I suggest getting the book "what to expect when you're expecting" it tells you what to expect at all the visits! Good luck!

Erica G, did you have a papsmear test done at your 10 week appointment??? because ive heard a few people say this... im hoping i dont have to...

Ashlee, I actually had my yearly pap smear done when I was about 2 weeks pregnant. Of course we did not know I was pregnant at the time, but the results came back normal so I didn't have to have one at my ten week appointment. The book that I was talking about said that you should expect to get one though. It really depends on your doctor and when your last pap smear was. :o) hope that helps!
