Hello, question for anyone that has had their 12 week visit. My Dr. mentioned doppler and I also think he mentioned ultrasound. Are these the same thing. My husband is going with me today and we're not sure what to expect. I'd really like to see ultrasound, the one at 8 weeks didn't show much........anyone know?

hi Julie, The doppler is to be able to hear your baby's heartbeat which you probably saw on the u/s at 8 weeks but didn't here. I'm sure you'll be amazed at the changes in your baby!! I'm going on the 18th for my 12 week visit... can't wait.. but I'm so nervous at the same time! Let me know how things go!

Julie - March 8

Ok, so you don't think there will is an ultrasound WITH the Doppler?

citrouille - March 8

I do think you will have both! Doppler to hear the heartbeat and u/s to see your baby. Unless it is some kind of combined machine.. Did you see or hear or both your baby's heartbeat before at 8 weeks?

Just saw the heartbeat, well, Dr. saw the heartbeat and said "ok we're good to go", I was like........hold on, I didn't see anything........ I'm all confused. Oh well, what will be will be. I'm very excited but nervous too. I'm 38 years old...........so more chance of problems. Thanks for your thoughts.

The heartbeat isn't much to see at 8 weeks.. it kind of looks like a flickering light. You may have seen it without realizing. Apparently they only look at it that early because they consider it too invasive to listen. But, this next time you'll be able to hear it! I undestand you being nervous. Of course there are always more reasons to be concerned over the age of 35, but don't forget more and more women are having babies later! I'm 27 but had a m/c in Nov so I'm extra nervous too! I think it is great that you are having a baby at 38 :) The younger you feel, the younger you appear and the better you feel!

Thanks so much for your thoughts and encouragement Citrouille. Yeah, I just got married (first marriage) in November 2003 and my husband is 42, so it will be just one for us. But we have tons of family and friends, so we're lucky.........Good luck to you........I can imagine you are extremely nervous!!! My Dr. told me at the last visit when he saw the heartbeat that "chances are you'll stay pregnant now, but still wait to tell people until after 12 weeks" GOOD LUCK TO YOU!!!

Citrouille, if you're interested I'll get back on this thread tomorrow and tell you what all happened at the 12 week ultrasound........wait, maybe this isn't your first and you've been through it all before.........

Julie please do tell me! this is my first!

I had an u/s at 10 weeks and 5 days, the baby was very active and my doctor told me that I could tell people. Why didn't she do the doppler? Can you only hear the heart beat at 12 weeks? Please let me know tomorrow. Good luck!

Bad news for me. At the appointment on the 8th the Dr. saw no heartbeat. I have a doppler at the hospital at 7am. If that confirms no heartbeat he's doing a d/c at about 1:00pm. I'm not sure how to feel. The 8 week ultrasound was fine. Good luck to the rest of you. I'll probably go to the miscarriage site starting tomorrow. There appears to be lots of others that had the same situation.

Meredith, to answer your question. I believe they don't do doppler until 12 weeks, heartbeat isn't loud enough. Glad your visit at 10 weeks 5 days went well.

Julie, I'm so sorry to hear the bad news. I really sympathize.. as you know I've been through a miscarriage so I know your pain. The pregnancyloss.info is a great website and you'll meet tons of loving people. I'm currently a member.. on the pregnancy board but I'll come check up on you on the miscarriage board of course. My pseudo there is Jocelyn. Lots and lots of hugs.

Julie - March 9

Thank you Citrouille. They did confirm no heart beat or growth since probably about 8 weeks. I'll be going to the miscarriage site. Good luck to you!

Julie, I am so sorry to hear that, I'm 36 and this will be my 3rd, and it does scare me to be older and going through this again. My 12th week appt isnt until the 25th, and your story scares me, were there no signs that something might have been wrong? again I am so sorry to hear about your loss!! Penny

Julie - March 9

Hi Penny, unfortunately no sign at all. My husband went with me for a 12 week ultrasound that we thought would be an extremely happy event. We were both in tears by the end of the visit and I was scheduled for a D&C today. We "kindof" know my Dr. on a personal level so he is "working me in" today. I've been sitting at home waiting to hear when I should go up to the hospital since 8:00am. The waiting is just agony. I want it over so I can begin to heal. Coincidentally, today I had a little bit of bright pink on the toilet paper but that's all...........good luck to you. For me, Its just a fluke I hope and if we decide to try again, maybe the outcome will be better!!

I heard the heartbeat via when I had My first sonogram at 8 weeks and another at 9 weeks...both of them were at mt drs office. Its free so thats why we get one each visit and when its busy.
