Alcohol During Pregnancy

I have just found out I am pregnant. I think I an about 7 weeks. However, in the last 7 weeks I have been pretty merry on alcohol at least 4 times. On one occasion I was quite drunk. I am really worried that I may have damaged the foetus. Someone told me the baby isn't affected for at least 6 weeks after implantation - is this correct ?

Hi. In answer to your question, I drank a few times and got merry on a few occasions in my first pregnancy (before I knew I was pregnant that was!) My daughter is just fine now. However, I must say that I've never heard about the baby not being affected for atleast 6 weeks after implantation. From the moment those group of cells that form the foetus implant into your womb lining, it forms a bond with you. The bond is blood vessels that eventually turn into the umbilical cord. Therefore, not long after it's implanted, you're sharing blood vessels with your feotus meaning that anything that goes into your body (ie. alcohol) that goes into your bloodstream, a certain amount pa__ses to your unborn child. I would not be concerned that you've had a few drinks. My doctor has told me that 2 drinks a week (2 gla__ses of wine for instance) is BETTER than no alcohol a week... I too was a little confused. She had told me that studies suggested that alcohol (particulary wine) can help open blood vesseld to the unborn baby and also relax the expectant mother. So good luck and look after yourself.
