Binge Drank First 3 Weeks Post Conception

Feeling Bad 6933 - October 24

I posted this question on 3 other forums, but no one answered. Maybe this is the right board? I hope you can help me. I just found out I am pregnant and went to the doctor the same day (I have progesterone problems so I go the day I get a positive). Dr. says conception occurred 3 weeks 2 days ago which puts me at 5 weeks 2 days when you add the 2 weeks. We saw the heartbeat! Wonderful moment, but, here is why I am writing…I admit to being a terrible binge drinker of white wine. I am ashamed to admit I routinely had 4 glasses of wine a night 5 to 6 days a week until I found out I was pregnant. In fact, I drank at a business function the night before I saw the heartbeat on the ultrasound! Of course, I stopped drinking immediately and will not drink any more. Pregnancy makes me completely stop anything bad. We were trying to get pregnant, but I just had my IUD out and had a period, so I thought I was clear. Also, I test every other week so I can stop bad behaviors. When I got a positive test I was already 3 weeks, 2 days post conception. I’ve read so much that says the 3rd week post conception is the worst for drinking. I drank 5 out of 7 days (4-5 glasses each time) during the 3rd week. That’s over 20 glasses of wine! The next day I see the HEARTBEAT! What have I done? Did I ruin the heart? I hear stories about people partying a couple of times before knowing, but that’s nothing compared to what I have done. If the heart is beating does that mean the placenta is fully working? I know there is a window when not much is shared between mother and baby. Am I close to that window even after the heartbeat has shown? I workout, eat right, no caffeine, and now no wine. I go back in 2 weeks (will be just over 5 weeks post conception by then which will put me at 7 weeks 2 days.) Does the fact that I saw the heartbeat the day after drinking make it worse? My doctor said not to worry because not much neurological development had taken place yet, but I still worry. ?

Whoa you knew you were pregnant and still drank???

I think that the baby will be fine... as your doctor said, not much of the neurological development has taken place yet. I do think that maybe you should get counselling for your drinking. You don't want to start back on it after your child is born.

Every case is different and you really never know till the little one arrives, but both my sister and a very close friend drank a good bit while they were in the early weeks of pregnancy. They had done tests and they came back negative a couple of weeks after they had missed their periods, so they thought they were safe. For one, it was around Mardi Gras and the other around Jazz Fest (we live in New Orleans). So lord knows they did some partying!!! But now that you know, you're doing the right thing by stopping. Best of luck to you!

Oh, and both of them have wonderful, smart, normal children...who love Mardi Gras and Jazz Fest as much as their mommies!

Really, at that early, if something was going to happen, you would have miscarried. Chances are your baby is absolutely fine. Just try to limit yourself now. A lot of Dr.'s in the UK actually recommend drinking a gla__s of red wine a day because of the iron it contains. I know the US is much more conservative on the issue. But please be comforted that there are so many things that happen in the beginning of the pregnancy that, like I said, if something was going to happen, your body most likely would have miscarried.

ok I am an idiot, sorry I need to read things like 3 times anymore to get it. Oh yeah you should be fine, I had a feeling I was pregnant but the test said no on friday so I got completely trashed and took another on sunday and got a bfp. You will be fine, congrats to you!

I think your baby is going to be fine. I wouldnt stress over it. Just stay away now. It is a good thing you quit drinking and yes it is hard to give up something you love. So good job!

I had a few friends who had no idea they were pregnant and drank a bit before they found out. The doctor's a__sured them they were fine. We were on the wedding circuit, with a different wedding every weekend and the rehearsal dinners....there was a lot of drinking and their children are fine. However, now that you know...stay away from the wine! ;)

Your baby should be fine. You didn't know you were pregnant when you drank, and it's still very early on, and it should be fine. I drank occasionally before I am pregnant, and i was drinking 3 days before I POAS at a wedding.

Your baby should be fine. You didn't know you were pregnant when you drank, and it's still very early on, and it should be fine. I drank occasionally before I am pregnant, and i was drinking at a friend's wedding 3 days before I tested positive. You have to stop now that you know you are pregnant!
