Early Ultrasounds Dont S Let Them Scare You

Hi I have been reading this forum since I knew my wife was pregnant with what will be our first baby. I note that many people get stressed and frightened with the results of early ultrasounds. I thought that sharing our story may help to put some minds at ease. When my wife went for her first ultrasound she was supposed to be 6 weeks pregnant based on LMP. Doctor said that she was only measuring about 4 weeks (all she could see was a gestational sac…) and that either the dates were wrong or that a miscarriage was on the way. We knew for sure that the dates could not be that wrong (2 weeks is a h__l of a lot…) but we could do nothing but wait. Anyway, one month later we went for a follow up appointment and the baby was measuring 9 weeks 3 days with a strong heartbeat (i.e., only a 4 day difference between ultrasound age and LMP age). I subsequently learned from another doctor that babies grow at different paces and that during the first 12 weeks ultrasounds should just be used to rule out ectopic pregnancies. My wife is now 14 weeks pregnant with everything going just fine. I am also posting this on the “pregnancy complications” thread. Just wanted to share our story and try to give some hope to all the couples who are scared because early ultrasounds contradict “standard normal pregnancy”. All the best for you and your babies. thank you! I'm going in a couple weeks to have one done at 8 weeks and 4 days, so that is very helpful

Thanks Mz, we are going for our first U/S tomorrow, and are really nervous. But from what you said, it is really calming us down.

Mz, thank you so much for posting this. I really needed to hear this because I had the same thing happen. I am currently coming up on 9 weeks (after being set back almost 2 early on) and my dr. didn't seem too worried. I've felt great so far so I am praying every day that everything will be fine. This is the first time I have really gotten some hope about it. It seems that anytime anyone posts about this they disappear before I get to hear how it turned out. Thank you again... :-)

I am now in my 3rd trimester - I would like to add that a lot of times they will only see a gestational sack until some point in the 6th week. Heartbeats can start around 6 weeks...in my case, they didn't see a consistent heartbeat until week 7. My daughter is doing fine (even with bleeding from week 5-8). Even if the doctors express concern, it doesn't mean there is actually a problem. The best - and hardest- thing to do is to relax. Wait and see what happens. The odds are in your favor.

I just came back from my first doc appt and they did an ultrasound because i was having spotting for about a week. i have known i'm pregnant for 2 weeks now and my lmp is 6 weeks, 2 days but all they showed was a gestational sac and nothing else and it measured only 4 weeks, no one really explained this to me and i went home crying not understanding how it's possible? I guess that I should just wait and see what happens since I have another ultrasound in 2 weeks. I just don't know how much more of this worry i can take since I've already been to the ER once and had spotting. The doc said that the pelvic exam all felt normal. I'm so confused...thanks for giving me some hope at least. :)
