Emotional Stress During Pregnancy

I am 8w/4d pregnant and thrilled beyond words. Newly married, just 3 months, and things are TERRIBLE at home. My husband (who has turned into Dr. Jekyl) fights with me horribly from the minute I get home from work until about 1:00am every night. I can't take it anymore and have told him that I'm worried sick that it will affect the baby. (We have an appt for a marriage counselor - thank God - on Monday.) This man was loving and wonderful during our courtship and I don't even know him anymore. Does anyone know if extreme stress will cause problems to the baby? I read that it can cause birth defects??!!

I don't think you have to worry about stress causing birth defects but it is definitely not good for your health, and in turn that will affect your pregnancy. I am happy to hear that you have appt. I think when men feel the pressure of fatherhood they freak out but forget what our bodies are going through. I have had horrible fights with my dh in the past two months (I am 10 wks. pregnant) and sometimes my tummy hurts from the stress. I have found that a mantra really helps me. (Something that I repeat over and over to calm myself down.) So, I will go outside or remove myself from the situation and say "I will have a healthy and happy pregnancy" or I will pray the rosary and say the Hail Mary over and over again. Usually the repet_tion gets my blood pressure back down and then I can face the situation better. Good luck!
