Finding An OB GYN Looking For Advice Please

Hi all... just got a positive hpt, and will be looking for an OB/GYN. Does anyone have any good stories to relate about how they went about finding a good one? I'm hesitant to ask friends/family... I don't want to share the news until I'm at least 3 months along & know that everything is going well (I've sworn my husband to secrecy too.). BTW, I'm in Woodridge, Illinois... If anyone has a brilliant local suggestion, I'd be forever grateful!

Where I live now, it was an easy decision! There is only one... fortunately, she's great. Where I used to live, though.... I don't know if you would be able to find someone like this to ask, but I have a friend who used to do mammograms in a women's health center, and she told me the name of the lady that the majority of the women she'd seen recommended. They were right... after some bad experiences, I couldn't believe how wonderful the new one was!

Oh, and you wouldn't have to tell anyone why you're looking for a ob, just say you're needing to have an annual exam!

I was in this same situation, and asked one of my friends to talk to another girl that we work with who had just had a baby about a year ago who her doctor was. I would rather "network" and OB/GYN then to draw from a hat. I've done that before and I ended up switching half way through. (not a good idea) You must have at least one person you can confide in to keep quiet :)

Thanks D & Penny... I hadn't even thought of just using the "annual exam" excuse... Another question though: I don't even know what questions to ask the practice about their "philosophy" I guess?... I have a friend who's three labors were all induced for the convenience of the doctor, which just sounds appalling to me. I just don't know how I'd screen something likethat out.

Regarding the screening questions, you could ask your new Doctor what his policy on delivery is. I have a new Doctor and I plan to ask him that on my next appt. since I live about an hour away from where I will deliver. I was in the same boat as you not too long ago. My Doctor in my town only participates at a hospital that recently stopped taking my insurance. They would have authorized for me to go there but I did not want to risk it. I researched and found a wonderful hospital with an amazing repuation for OB in San Diego and I started asking friends and neighbors (since I recently moved to CA) about anyone they knew that they could reccomend for an annual. This was not successful since most of them used a Doctor up where we live but I got amazing feedback on the hospital since they knew we were ttc. I wound up getting lucky one day and met a Doctor who was visiting one of the Doctors I sell pharmaceutical products to. He was his friend and was an ob/gyn that worked out of the hospital I chose. He made me feel so comfortable, I chose him to be my Doctor - best decision I ever made! I think that it was fate for me to randomly bump into him like that. I would say to use the 'annual exam' excuse and then ask as many questions as you wish at your first appt. to see if you are comfortable there. Congratulations and good luck!
