I was so excited to be getting into my 13th week and not having gotten sick yet. Lo and behold, I have a terrible cold now. Mostly just a sore throat and sinus headache. I heard that bendaryl has a small possibility of causing heart defects. What can I take that is completely safe for the baby? Are cough drops safe too? (sorry if this seems silly but I need to get better somehow!)

I've never heard that about benadryl. Thats supposed to be one of the safe drugs during pregnancy. You'd have to ask your doctor, because allot of drugs arent safe in certain tri-mesters, but are perfectly safe in others. My doctor told me I could take Mucinex DM. I'm 10 weeks, btw. cough drops are safe. I'm terribly sick also, and I'm just tryin to get past it w/o any medicine, except for some cough drops. I dont take medicine when I'm pregnant unless I absolutely have to.

I just heard it from another board on a different site from this lady that had a stillborn and she had taken a lot of benadryl in early pregnancy and then recently heard about it having a possibility of causing heart problems for the baby (that's what her baby had). Not saying its true, but you know how it is when you're pregnant. You take everyone seriously when they are talking about the health of you baby =)

I always heard it was safe, now I'm freaking out b/c I took it yesterday! I havent taking a bunch though, only 2 (at different times of the day) but I wont be taking that anymore!

You can try oil or oregano. It just helps to kill any bacteria in your body so you can get better faster. It also helps keep your immune system strong. I see a Naturopath, and he's advised that it's safe to take during pregnancy.

Hey Lovestruck - what kind of cold do you have? I've had an upper resp. infection for 2 +weeks & was told i can take tylenol & a certain sudafed, the bugger is anything you're allowed to take is not strong enuff to kick the cold so you basically suffer longer. If you tool around webmd there's a list of what you can take safely durning pgcy, including for heartburn & other illness. Otherwise ask a nurse at your Dr's office, she'll tell ya. I didn't think you could take benadryl tho.
