How Many Weeks Before You Hear The Heartbeat

how many weeks do you have to be to hear the heartbeat on the outside of your stomach without having an va___al ultrasound?

It all depends on your size and how the baby is positioned. This is my first, and I heard the heartbeat at 7.5 weeks. I'm pretty skinny, and they said that helps a lot. The bigger your stomach, the more the doppler has to go through. I had a friend that couldn't hear the heartbeat until 16.5 weeks, but she was bigger in the belly. Good Luck!!

Just another interesting thing I ran across, supposedly you can start hearing the heartbeat at home with a stethoscope around 20 weeks.

I went to the dr today for my 1st us. I measured 7w6d (but from LMP I was 8w last friday--so I'm 4 days off) anyways, they said it was too soon to hear the heartbeat today, but I could definitely see it, it was 165. When I go back on 5/4 (which is aboug 12w) they said we should be able to hear it.

what is the difference between a doppler and a stethoscope?will my normal gp have a doppler?

emily - I don't know what your gp will have... but a stethoscope is what they use to listen to your heart with the ears... the doppler is equipment that magnifies the sound and is able to find tiny things like a baby heartbeat much easier! I have a blood pressure cuff and stethoscope set at home, so I'm just looking forward to being able hear the heartbeat anytime I want! 4 weeks between appointments seems like an eternity sometimes!

J, we heard the heartbeat at 8.5 weeks, at my first appt. I think that everyone is different, as is the Doctor and when they conduct their first u/s. I was not expecting to hear anything at this visit and before I knew it, that's all we heard. Good luck!
