Hi everyone, I'm glad to find this forum as I'm 28, happily married and just found out i'm pregnant by taking a home pregnancy test on sunday night (4th). My period was supposed to come on thursday and after it didn't show up I started cramping and got a pregnancy test. It showed up positive and my husband and I are excited but almost more in shock. we want kids but when reality hits that we are actually pregnant it's scary. since i've never been pregnant (and my best friend says i'm like 4 weeks along) - can anyone give me any tips of advice for the next thing I should do?? I've read things about getting a blood test, getting an OBGYN, etc.. I'm lost and very overwhelmed right now. I've been fighting a horrible cold now for a week which sucks but my symptoms are sore br___ts, cramping in my abdominal area, feeling very tired alot and not having anything sound good for food. Please help!! What should I do???

well first off, congrats!!! you deffinatly sound pregnant, and the chances of having a false positive pregnancy test are slim in none, so i don't think a blood test is really all that necca__sary unless you really think there is a chance you might not be pregnant. my first advice would be for you to start taking prenatals and folic acid. secondly, make a doctors appointemt, allthough there is not a big rush on that one since most doctors like to wait until around week 8 to see you. i don't know how all doctors are though. third, enjoy and get plenty of rest. you are extra tired for a reason, so don't ignore it. eat what you can that will help boost your energy, but dooo get some extra rest. oh, and start weening off of caffine. and that should be it.

Congrats, allie. It's totally normal to feel that way once you are PG. This is my first pregnancy (13.5 wks) and I am also 28! It was completely planned and we tried for 9 months before we got the positive. I have days when I get nervous and begin to wonder "what did I get myself into?" and other days when I am over the moon. It's normal! Once you hear that heartbeat, the reality of the life you are growing will hit you! Good luck!

I would go to the drs and get him to verify the pregnancy and than speak with him about seeing an OBGYN. Also I would go to Walmart and get started on prenatal vitamins, the pharmacist should be able to help you out no problem. Just get lots of rest and drink plenty of water, I am 26 weeks 3 days pregnant and im fighting off an evil flu and I had cramping due to that. Also try to have soup you have to make sure you eat something :) take care and congrads

Hi Ginger - thanks for the positive words. This was also a planned pregnancy - but I had just gone off the pill in December so we hadn't gotten pregnant for 2 months. So I guess after 2 months with nothing we thought it would be longer - so we are surprised. Yeah, my husband was saying just last night that it will take like a sonogram or a heartbeat for reality to hit for him. I guess guys are like that - needing proof. I'm just in shock.

i'm taking multi-vitamins right now. should i change over to prenatal vitamins? is there a difference?

frozenfeet - March 7

yes, you should switch...prenatals have more iron, calcium but more importantly...folic acid. You need 1mg of folic acid a day!! Congrats to you, next thing to do, call your doctor and tell them you got a positive test and you would like to know the next steps. Also, I must reccommend to you, "what to expect when you are expecting". A wonderful book that every expecting mother should have and read! It's a wonderful reference guide!!

alliecat - March 7

i've heard about that book. i'll pick it up today. i also feel really bloated - is that normal? like my baggies pants are tight.

i don't want to be a pain, but i have to desagree on what to expect when your expecting. it is usefull at times for me, but i find myself frustrated with the lack of timeline and other little things that for me it just doesn't provide. i would suggest if you get that one, also get a book that breaks down into weeks. i have "your pregnancy week by week" and it really gives a solid timeline for the babies devolpement and what my body might be doing and what tests to expect during the upcoming weeks. and since doctors break your pregnancy down into weeks and going by weeks is a little more accurate than months since not all months have the same amount of days and such.. blah blah blah.... that is my last suggestion. :)

frozenfeet - March 7

pregnancy week by week is a great book too, but I just found that as a reference guide, when I've got questions, What to expect is easier to find a quick answer!

alliecat - March 7

thanks tish - i'll look into a week by week book too. i'll probably end up with a whole stack of books. also - when is the appropriate time to start telling people we're pregnant? we've told my parents and my best friend but when should we start telling other people???

Alliecat, you probably want to stop taking any cold medicine also. Consult a pharmacist or doctor before taking anything, including prescriptions!

Telling is personal choice. I am waiting until the third trimester is over, that is when your odds of miscarriage lower tremendously.

alliecat - March 7

i talked to the pharmacist and they said to take regular strength tylenol only. so that's all i've been taking - i think that's why it's taking so long to get over being sick. also, i'm taking my 5 year old niece to disneyland this weekend - even though i'm only 4 weeks pregnant should i not go on the "rougher" rides??

heather28 - March 7

First off congrats!! Do not go on any rides that are fast or rough. All the rides should have signs posted and if it says don't ride if pregnant...DON'T. It's better to be safe than sorry. Make sure you stay hydrated and rest plenty. You may need her to push you around in a stroller. :) When we took my daughter to Magic Kingdom she was worn out after about 3 hours. (And she was 6 or 7) Have fun, but don't overdo it.

frozenfeet - March 8

not the end of the 3rd trimester, the baby will be here then...lol...but most wait unitl 10/12 weeks...when the chance of miscarrige is decreased!

CONGRAGULATIONS! FIRST! im very excited for you! i didnt find out i was pg till 5 weeks! Most important thing sofar now, is to keep eating! you must eat, no matter what even if youre nauseous. try to keep something down like..c.rackers...i went to sams club and got those really yummy low fat stauffers animal crackers in the GINORMOUS tub. my doctor prescribed me prenatal vitamins. but the way it happened for me, i had missed my period for a week and couldnt read any of my pg at home tests for sure....so i went to the dr the 7th day of my missed period.t hey did a test and told me iwas pregnant. i started laughing and crying and i had so many different emotions i was a wwreck!! but the same day the doctor confirmed it, he prescribed me prenatal vitamins and i went and got it filled immediately. those are very important, DONT MISS THEM!!! =) tish is very right about caffeine, im having a hard time with that. all i used to drink is soda so now im having to get caffeine free to trick myself haha. but erm, i got some bottled water too. you really will feel better the more water you drink, soda strips your body of water! drink plenty of it. oh and you need more calcium now, so if you like broccoli and cheese, they make little microwaveable trays. very convenient and a good source of calcium!=D when youre tired , rest...it takes alot of energy to make another life inside of you! i got my first ultrasound at 8 weeks. let me tell you, i was so excited! even thoughm y baby was tiny, it was my tiny peanut gummy bear. you know?? i could see its little head and everything. when she let me listen ot the heartbeat i nearly cried. it is so amazing. imjust ten weeks now, but my b___sts have grown a cup size(from 32A to 32B) and im already gettng stretch marks on them (grrrr) so ive been combatting that with cocoa b___ter lotion. i can tell you, now everytime i see a little baby, i nearly cry because this being my first pregnancy, i cant believe im going to have one of my own! heres some books i have that have been helpful to me: you can find all these at barnes and noble my first pregnancy journal(purple spining) pregnancy week by week(VERY HELPFUL) i like in this one, that every week you get in detail , a whole page of whats going on with you and your baby Pregnancy Sucks what to do when your miracle makes you miserable(THIS IS MY FAVORITE! i know it sounds bad, but its very humorous and insightful. the author discusses all of the bad symptoms of pregnancy from bleeding nipples, to constipation....etc and ways to helpr elieve them) its by joanne kimes and i think i have a few more. the pregnancy journal is very helpful.=) i hopeive helped you some!
