No Corpus Luteum Cyst

Just came back from my "official" 1st sono. I say official b/c I had one the other day that one of the Doctors did just to make sure the pregnancy was in my uterus and no where else. Saw the baby's heartbeat again today...it as 165bpm and was measuring right according to my dates (7wks 3days). I asked the tech if she saw a corpus Luteum cyst on my oviaries and she said she did not see any. I asked the Doctor what this meant and he was very, very vague. He said it may be there and she (the tech) is just not seeing it. He asked me if we did Progesterone studies and I said no, so he sent me for a blood test to get my levels. He said though that even if they came back low, there is no evidence that progesterone suppositories would even help and would I really want to give myself two a day?? I guess I am just confused and now worried. Everything I read says that the corpus luteum is essential for sustaining the pregnancy....what if I don't have one. Does this mean I am at a risk for misscarriage??? Has anyone else been told they do not have a corpus luteum and everything was still ok?? Sorry for the long post....just worried!!

Jaydensmommy, I understand your concern...I really think this may be an u/s tech issue. or the machine just didn't get a clear picture. I saw mine on my u/s photos (doc pointed it out) but I also think that if you had NONE at all then there is no way your baby would be measuring to date and have such a healthy heartbeat. If it were me because I'm a worrier, I'd do the progesterone even if it were only to ease my mind. But, at this point in the pregnancy it probably isn't necessary because in as little as 2 weeks the placenta will already be starting to take over. The specialist I see even told me that progesterone is most effective when started 3 days after ovulation, so you are pretty far along and seem to be doing great!!! I know it's easy to say not to worry, but maybe get the progesterone results and go from there. Did he test you?

I did go for the test. It is going to take a couple of days to come back.....probably not until monday he said. I am going to be worried b/w now and then. I am really hoping that my levels come back ok. I feel like 5 days is so long to wait to take action if they are low, you know??

I'd just say that if it makes you feel relief of some sort, just ask if you can go ahead and start the progesterone. I've got a lot of experience with progesterone and my dr. that I see now actually presented a study on progesterone and explained to me that blood tests aren't even very accurate in diagnosing progesterone deficiency because levels fluctuate so much (from hour to hour for example) so it is only a tiny snapshot of the big picture, you know? So, progesterone does NOT hurt if you don't need it, therefore it is fine to take as a precaution! Hope that helps some :)

Thank you for your adivice. My Doctor is tyring to get the results for me by tomorrow so hopefully I will not have to wait it out all weekend. I was thinking the same thing with just starting it and then if I do not need it I can just stop it. The thing is, I also work with the Doctors that I see (in the hospital) and don't want to insult them by making suggestions in my care.
