I'm 8 weeks pregnant and coming down with SOMETHING. My boss's 2 year old had pnemounia (spell?) and was in the hospital last weekend - then he (the boss) came to work during the week wiht a sore throat and sounding horrible. THEN his wife came in later that week - both of them coughing all over the place - and KNOWING Im pregnant. We did our best to wipe down everything wiht Lysol, but now my throat hurts is scratchy and my nose is stuffy. Oh, did I mention they even brought in the kid on Thursday? I'm so mad! and I don't know what kind of medicine (if any) i can take. I'm drinking gatorade and resting but I am afraid that this will get worse. Please help!! What can I do?

bad news... - November 12

There's not a lot you can do. You're going to have to suffer through it. Cold medications are not safe for pregnancy. Sorry!

What about herbal throat drops? Can't I take anything at all?

Alyssa - November 12

I would just give your doctor or nurse a call and let her know you are becoming sick. They will beable to tell you what you can take.

Hi Marie. I am currently 10 weeks pregnant and I have my second cold this pregnancy. I asked my Dr. about it and she said there wasn't much I could do about it besides take a tylenol for body aches. but said a common cold would not affect baby, or even a flu wouldn't. so all you have to do is suffer through it. Sorry.

Hi Marie, I know exactly what you are going through...I had to colds in the past month and a half, and it wasn't fun...The second time around I had the sore throat thing myself, with the added bonus of an extremely runny nose, blocked sinuses and a terrible cough...I'm still not fully recovered, but I'm definitely getting better now...Drink lots of water to keep yourself hydrated, eat lots of fruit with high vit.C content (oranges, grapefruit, etc.) and my dr. told me to take calcium for some reason - it actually seemed to help...(Don't forget to take your prenatals, of course..) These are about the only things I know of that don't affect the baby...Other than that, my ob/gyn told me that having a cold or the flu in itself is not dangerous for the baby, no matter how you feel...Fever is though, so it's very important that you try to keep your temp. down...Hope this helps and that you feel better soon x

Try using a vaporizor that seemed to help me when I was sick at 12 weeks. My dr said just plain robittusin is ok, Afrin nasal spray is ok to use occasionally, and plain halls cough drops. Feel better!!

Some cold medicines ARE safe during pregnancy. Your doctor should have given you a list. On this list>>> You can take robutissin DM for cough, bendryl or sudafed for sinus and tylenol for aches/pains and fever. If you arestill worried call your doctor/midwife or nurse. You don't have to suffer.

Ashley - November 14

You can use vicks vaporub that should help also my dr said you can take only tylenol or sudafed(4 hr. not the 12 hr.) Good Luck. I just found out last week i'm about 5 1/2 wks. and i'm just getting over a nasty little cold. It sucks but the vitamins help since there's lots of zinc and C in them.

I know that there are several opinions around. I thought I would share what I had found in parents.com. Q: I am in my 19th week of pregnancy, and I suffer from allergies. Is there anything that I could take to relieve my symptoms and not hurt my baby? A: After the first trimester, it is safe to treat your allergies with antihistamines, including Benadryl and Chlor-Trimeton. Neither should pose a serious risk to the baby. Because there has been an a__sociation with cleft palate and antihistamine use in the first trimester, it is best to avoid them during the first twelve weeks and treat allergy symptoms with acetaminophen (Tylenol) and mentholated steam for sinus pain. Nasal sprays and eye drops should also be avoided in the first trimester and then only be used with a doctor's permission. Overall, it is important to check with your doctor before taking any over-the-counter medication while pregnant.

HEATHER - November 18

YOU CAN TAKE ROBITESSON THATS WHAT MY DOCTOR TOLD ME.. SO YOU DONT HAVE TO SUFFER..

Deidre - December 4

Honey, you don't have to suffer. I'm actually sick right now. Afrin is ok occasionally. So is benadryl and robitussin.

js - December 5

Bad news has not a clue!!!! Sudafed and a bunch of others mentioned already are perfectly safe!!! You don't have to suffer and your baby will be fine!

omar martinez - December 5

im pregnat and i have 20 weeks in can take medicine?

Te'Onia Gowdy - December 5

Sorry Sweetheart, seems like you have to do this one on your own. But look on the bright side, I would gladly take that cold over my severe morning sickness. Your pregnant, prepare yourself. You'll probably go through worse.
