I am 6w pregnant and work in a large beauty salon (hair and nails) full time and I was wondering if anyone has heard that it can hurt my baby?? Some things I read say it is safe and others say the fumes can cause birth defects.... Im really afraid of hurting the baby

Hi Nat, The first trimester is the most crucial time for setting the blue print for your babies future. That said..all the vital organs are forming at this time.. so, it is best to avoid toxic fumes as much as possible..this includes nail polish remover which may contain formaldihide, also, perm solutions, and hair dyes and many other toxic solvents which may enter your blood stream..and be pa__sed along to the growing fetus. If you are at all concerned for the health of your baby, I would try to limit my exposure on a daily basis. If you can switch to part time or find something else until you are well into your second trimester. I too was working in an environment where there was second hand smoke (a bar) so I had to quit my job. I just want to say I did everything I could to prevent miscarriage or potential problems. I am approaching my 11th week. There is a chance nothing at all could happen to your baby as I am sure many women have had normal babies in a similar situation..but there are also women who smoke and drink and they to have normal babies...but there is definately a link between the lack of oxygen and blood flow reaching the placenta when there is exposure to toxicities. Good Luck to you Kristin
