I just found out I was pregnant, and it was an unplanned pregnancy. I have not been taking prenatal vitamins. I heard you need the folic acid to make sure your baby is healthy. Do I just start them now? I'm going to call my doctor tomorrow, but I want to know what to do for the time being....Please help!!

Your doctor might give you some. I started taking mine as soon as i found out.

Yes, you start taking them now. Your doctor can prescribe some or you can get them at your local drugstore. Prenatals usually contain folic acid, but you can take an additional folic acid supplement as well. I take my prenatal along with an additional folic acid.

Chloe - yes, you should take prenatals, but you certainly don't need to get a perscription! You can purchase prenatals at any pharmacy, walmart, etc. Or, if you have a multi-vitamin at home, take those until you get a chance to pick up your prenatals. You should only take one vitamin, not both a multi and a prenatal. The only major difference between a prenatal and a multi is that a prenatal has more iron, which you need because the volume of blood in your system will increase by up to 50% and you don't want to become anemic. As for taking additional supplements - you can, like pbj does - but it's not recommended. You certainly don't need more folic acid than what a prenatal already offers, and the extra you just pee out. Make sure you're drinking plenty of milk, too. Remember the body can only absorb up to 500mg of calcium at a time - so don't down a yogurt and a gla__s of milk at once - it won't do you any good calcium wise. Congrats and good luck!

thank you for the info! my doc won't see me for another 4 weeks because she technically doesn't see her patients until the 8th week. Is that normal? Also, are there any specific prenatal vitamins you recommend? I just went to walgreens, and they don't have anything named "prenatal" vitamins.

I bought mine from walmart. there called One Source Complete Prenatal. They have a pink label. They have folic acid and everything else you would need.

I bought mine at Walmart as well. They're by Spring Valley and they're called Prenatal. Look for pictures of babies on the front. As for the 8th wk appt - yup, I heard that's very normal. Many dct's won't see you until you've missed 2 periods.

Actually, let me state why I take an additional folic acid...my prenatal only contains 400 mcg. It's recommended that you get at least 600 mcg, so my doctor recommended that I take an additional.

pbj - that's interesting! What kind of prenatal do you use? Mine has 800mg of folic acid. I see now why you'd take a supplement!
