Hello. I'm 8 weeks (I believe) and I've started bleed. It started out as a very light pink discharge, but it had definitely advanced to a very red discharge. It's not flowing because I've had a pad on for 5 hours, and there's no blood on the pad. However, when I'm urinating, I can see the blood drip into the bowl. Considering I've never seen spotting before and the last thing I can recall my doctor saying is, "If you bleed, you probably are having a period...that's normal. But if you start spotting, that's not good." I'm a bit freaked out because I'm 41 years old, this is my first pregnancy, and apparently, I am at a higher risk for miscarriage than most of you. Here's my problem...my cramps are usually extremely painful. After reading some of the other topics regarding miscarriages (so I could distinguish between a period/cramp session and a miscarriage), I was wondering if there is any outstanding feature that relates to a miscarriage as opposed to a really bad cramp so that I can tell the difference and stop worrying? I will be talking to my doctor later this morning, but I was hoping that someone would be up at this hour to ensure me that all is ok. I want to wake up my husband and have him drive me to the er, but I don't know if that would be appropriate. I've heard stories from other pregnant women who have called ERs and have been told that if they were miscarrying, then it wouldn't matter if they came into the ER because they wouldn't be able to do anything. I am also wondering why there are some who state that any vaginal bleeding or any type of discharge that is red is considered dangerous by some, and normal for others. Sometimes this pregnancy thing is pretty confusing, and I'm trying not to stress out because I don't want anything else to harm my baby. Thanks.

Gmonny- I understand your problem. I had the same thing happen to me. Yes, there are women who supposedly bleed during pregnancy(like a normal period), and go on to have healthy babies. In general...if you are bleeding ALLOT and experiencing bad cramping....that is not good. a little cramping minus the blood, or very light bleeding (which could still be spotting)...is generally not going to be a bad sign. that being said.....all women's bodies react differently to pregnancy, so it is hard for me to tell you one way or the other. when I m/c the cramping was sooo bad that I was sweating and felt faint (it was definatly different than period cramping). I cant say what other women experienced, but that is my story....hope this helps.

i my aunt who is now pregnant also spotted during her first 12 weeks and is now bout to find out what her baby is but the cramping i would worry about. I would go to the er although some hospitials dont care unless your 12 weeks or more good luck and God bless

I had cramping in early pregnancy (no bleeding) and the cramps were pretty bad. At about 5 weeks, I remember being on the bathroom floor because I was so faint from the pain. Turns out everything was ok though and now I'm 26 weeks with a healthy baby girl on the way. Hope you got in touch with your doctor.

Hello all...since no one has an exact answer on how to tell the difference between a miscarriage and a period/cramping, let me just inform you...it doesn't matter. Although it is 'normal' to have a 'period', it is 'not normal' to bleed like a normal period. For me, my baby didn't make it, and while I'm ok now about the whole thing, I've learned at least one thing about this whole experience...no matter what anyone says about bleeding during pregnancy, it is usually NOT allright and it is therefore extremely important to see the doctor. It is also NOT an emergency, so unfortunately, if the bleeding is due to a miscarriage, you will not now for certain until the doctor orders an ultrasound. I don't want to sound bitter, because I am not. I feel that even though I'm saddened by this experience, apparently it was not intended to be at this time. If at first you don't succeed, try, try again...isn't that the saying? Good luck to all and I hope to post with you again sometime in the near future!!

It has been 45 days since my last period. Yesterday I had a very tiny amount of pinkish discharge then today I wake up feeling like crap. I went to the bathroom and sure enough I was bleeding a very large amount. There was none in my panties, just alot of clots when I peed. I don't know if this is a period or a m/c. I never did take a pregnancy test because I didn't want to be bummed if it was negative.
