Well, I went to the doctor when I was 9 weeks pregnant and had an ultrasound and the baby looked great.. my doctor said I wouldnt have another ultrasound until I am 20 weeks, which is when I will find out what I am having.. that seems too far away :( Was anyone else able to find out what they were having earlier than this? Also, I have another appointment on the 11th, I am 12 weeks today, so will be 13 weeks then, will he chceck for the heartbeat? I am worried he wont... and I will have to go another 8 weeks without any proof that my baby is ok :(

It is possible that you can tell the s_x of the baby as early as 16-17 weeks. I was supposed to get mine at 17.5 weeks, but the OB was booked so I had to wait another week, which will put me at 18.5 weeks when I get mine. I got my first ultrasound at 13 weeks. At 13 weeks they will probably begin checking for a heartbeat with the doppler-- it is sometimes still hard to hear at that stage, but they should be able to get it. I heard mine loud and clear at 13 weeks. It just took the Dr. a minute to find it because she thought the baby was lower than it was.

I had a dr appt at last week (11 weeks) and we heard the heartbeat! The doc did warn me though, that at 11 weeks, she was only about 60/40 success rate at hearing the hb. This is my 4th pregnancy. From this point on the doc will start each of your appts with hearing the hb. So, don't worry, you will get your rea__surrance very soon!!!! It's always a wonderful sound! :-)

Mom-to-be - The doctor sould be able to get a hb unless your doctor is like mine and doesn't own a doppler! Mine uses the old fashioned fetal heart stethascope. You might want to think about renting or buying a doppler. Just google doppler rental and there are lots of places that you can get them without a doctors note.

20 weeks ultrasounds is usually the earliest they can tell the s_x. But sometimes not even possible then. And your doc should check the heartbeat at each appointment after 12 weeks.
