I had the same question; I caught a cold during my first trimester and wanted to take my usual dose of zinc. There are no randomized, controlled, double blind studies regarding zinc use in pregnant women, however, some studies have shown that too much zinc can cause birth defects. The recommended dose is 11 mg daily and to not exceed 40mg; Cold-eeze zinc lozenges contain 13.3 mg. I am opting to take two lozenges daily and forego my pre-natal vitamins and just take extra vitamin C and folate while I have the cold.
