Are Nuts The Same As Peanuts

Hi I'm sure I have read somewhere thay pregnant women should avoid peanuts but surely peanuts are their own type of nut and are not the same as walnuts, hazelnuts etc. So I presume it's ok to carry on eating these other sorts of nuts? Just a thought! Thanks.

Peanuts are actually legumes - just like beans and peas. So you can eat nuts with no "peanut" worries!

I too would like to know if it's okay to eat other types of nuts! There is a peanut allergy in my family (my niece) so I am avoiding peanuts. I don't really understand the response from D?!!!

Peanuts are not nuts, they are beans. Nuts grow in pods on trees, peanuts grow in roots in the ground.

If you need more information, see www.peanut-inst_tute.org/PeanutFAQs.html We just call peanuts nuts, even though they are beans, the same as we call tomatos a vegetable, and they are really a fruit.

I've never heard anything about nuts, peanuts, being bad for you during pregnancy. I've been eating them. I know they're toxic to dogs! Ha ha!

Jess, D is correct, peas are like beans. That's not their problems though. Their problem is they are also a common alergen. A pregnant woman should avoid them if either her or the father or any previous children had alergic reactions to peanuts. Other nuts, are not only safe, but great sources of a mult_tute , especially calcium. For example, a cup of almonds contains as much calcium as a cup of milk, plus 500 mg. of pota__sium, 20 grams of fiber as well as a host of other nutrients, including folate, magnesium, iron, zinc and the B vitamins. Even better, almonds are among the richest food sources of the antioxidant vitamin E. Eat in moderation though, cause they also have high fat content!

BBK - thanks I see I was a bit confusing! In my head, after identifying peanuts as bean relatives, that cleared up the other nuts! You explained it much better!

D, you're very kind. :-) I typed it too fast, and even called them peas.... kinda of a busy morning!
