Baby S Surname

Hi I am with my partner but we are not married and don't intend to be, at least not yet anyway. Just wondered what surname my baby should have. Does it naturally take the fathers name anyway or can it have mine? I heard that it's only possible to change it's surname if and when we get married. Therefore if it takes the father's name and if we ever split up, the baby will always have his surname. Any thoughts?

Well if you think you guys are gonna get married and your childs going to end up with his last name, then you should just give him/her the fathers last name from the beginning. If you don't think you guys are going to get married and you want him/her to have your last name thats fine too.

Hi, Me and my partner are not married and trying to concieve and I always tease him about our future babies surname being mine not his! As far as I am aware a surname can be changed at any time in life. I know friends who have divorced parents and have taken on their new step parents surname when their mother (or father) re-married. Obviously a baby has no say so its a big decision to make when you are not married. Have you looked into the possibility of having a double-barrelled surname? That way the baby has both of your names! The only thing then would be deciding whose name goes first! lol good luck whatever you decide.
