Blood Pressure During Pregnancy

I am 38 weeks and my blood pressure has been fairly low throughout my pregnancy. However, I went to see the midwife today and she said it had gone up quite a bit. I believe it was still within the normal range though. Is it normal for blood pressure to go up towards the late stages of pregnancy and is it likely that it will continue to rise until I go into labour? I am worried about pre-eclampsia now. Plus I'm such an anxious person that I know if I stress too much during labour it might shoot up even more. Does anyone know what causes BP to go up? Any advice would be great. Thanks

Emily it's complicated, but variations are normal thoughout the pregnancy to up a point. Here is some reading for you from the NIH: http://tinyurl.com/9flzl

I wouldn't worry Emily, your baby is considered term at 37 weeks now and if your blood pressure does continue to rise your little one can be born now without complications. Even though your blood pressure does change throughout pregnancy.

It's normal for your blood pressure to rise a little during pregnancy...your body increases its volume of blood so that you have some extra blood for the delivery. If your midwife thought you were showing signs of preeclampsia, you'd probably be in the hospital giving birth right now. Don't be so worried, you're almost done!

Be careful and watch yourself. I ran into the same problem. My blood pressure was on the high side and jumped very high at 40 1/2 weeks. Needless to say I went to the doctor that morning and had a emergency c-section the same morning. My baby is fine, but make sure you watch it. Just stay calm if it does rise.
