Ohhh...I'm so jealous you have a chinchilla! I had one that lived for 15 years and just died of natural causes recently. I miss my little guy...his name was Chico. Well, here is what I found online...I will just copy and paste it for you...hope this helps and good luck! :) Don't clean the cageā€”get someone else to do this job! There is no reason for you to take any chance of infection with the several organisms that pets like chinchillas carry. Just as we advise pregnant women to avoid cat litter boxes, you should avoid the chinchilla's cage. Chinchillas (along with ferrets, gerbils, rabbits, and birds) can carry listeriosis, a bacterial infection that can cause pregnancy loss, fetal infection, and serious disease that develops in the newborn. Many other potentially harmful organisms are carried by these pets as well. Although animals purchased from a reputable pet store are generally free of disease, they still pose risks to vulnerable groups of children and adults. If you must change the cage, wear a mask and gloves. That's actually good advice generally for anyone dealing with animal droppings and urine. Holding the chinchilla seems to have much less risk, but wash your hands thoroughly after handling your pet.

Pregnant women are 20 times more likely to contract listeriosis which has been found in at least 37 mammalian species as well as some birds and fish. About 2500 people in the U.S. get listeriosis each year and of those about 500 die. It causes fetal death in about 80% of infections cases although it is possible for a baby to be born with congenital listeriosis. Gavinsmom was right on, this is no little thing. You may want to avoid your chinchilla for a while! Good luck to you and I hope you have a happy and healthy nine months!
