Conception After Laser Treatment

Hi, I would like to hear from anyone that knows anything about conceiving after laser treatment for pre-cancerous cells on the cervix. 7 years ago I had abnormal smear results which ended in a cone biopsy and laser surgery. At the time neither my dr or the gynecologists discussed the possible effects this would have on my ability to conceive but I recently read that laser surgery can damage the cervix and cause vital mucus glands to stop working. I have had normal smears now for 4 years and fingers crossed i am all clear and will stay clear but as I am now trying to conceive it is really playing on my mind so any comments are much appreciated.

hello...I had the surgery too where they took the very tip of my cervix...they told me when I had it done that it would be harder to get pregnant...but let me tell ya I got pregnant afterwards..and was on bc! It is possible...you do have scar tissue though and that messed up my labor I was not progressing I went from a 1 to a 10 in 10 minutes...basically it just took awhile for that scar tissue to break away. My labor nurse told me she has had a lot of women w/ that surgery come in a deliver babies and everytime or just about, she sees the same thing it just takes longer to progress. My cousin has the same worries as you as she just had this done..but I know if you don't have those removed you are chancing yourself to losing everything..keep your hopes up! If you had not had that surgery done..you might have went on into cancer and had to have had everything removed!

Thanks so much for your reply. I am a bit angry that this was never even mentioned to me by the dr's at the time. Obviously it would have made no difference to me having the surgery but they should've informed me of the possible long term effects. I am glad that all has worked out for you. You have really put my mind at rest and I hope all works out well for your cousin. thanks again :)

you are more than welcome! I know my cousin had the same worries...sorry to hear they did not tell you that! It will all work out...just don't try too hard! I had a lot of scar tissue...the most my nurse had ever seen and my cervix lays tilted and crooked...was not suppose to be able to have kids at all...so when it is your time it is your time no matter what the odds...but I think you oughta know what you will be up against when it is labor time...heck you might not even have that..that is just what happened to me but when you do get preg and go into labor..make sure you tell your nurse about that. Also I will tell you my nurse had just checked me 10 mins before and I was dialted to a 1 nothing major..and then just a few minutes later I felt like I could push so my mother in law rushed to get the nurse and that is when she discoverd it had broke..so if you feel like you need to push get someone to check you fast cause chances are well it is time! My doc told me about the possibilites of not being able to conceive but said he did this surgery every day many times a day and he thought everything would be ok if I decided...so you will be ok! Sorry about the long letter...but don't worry it will all work out in the wash it always does. Good luck!!!!
