Did I Do Harm To The Fetus Or Not

I have been using a rented fetal doppler for the past six weeks, and I'm now 16 weeks pregnant. My dr said the doppler is micro waves and not sound waves. I'm scared that I did some damage to my unborn baby. For the past six weeks I've used it every day to check my baby's heart beat, but only for a minute or less.....can someone please give me some advice on this????? please???? thanks.

Did your doctor say it was harmful?

No, she said I should be fine, but was curious if anyone else out there has been using their doppler as frequently as me.....and maybe their dr told them differently....please help!!!!!

I don't think using it for a minute or less would do much harm but I would suggest not checking everyday. Once or maybe twice a week. I know it is so comforting to hear the baby's heartbeat, that's my favorite part of going to the dr. but on the other hand not much changes from day to day. So checking it once a week would be better.

I was told that there is no evidence that those rented dopplers do/don't do harm, but it's better to be safe than sorry. My Dr. told me that if I did decide to rent one, not to listen to the HB for extended periods of time, like watching TV while listening to the HB. You should know what's excess and what's not. I agree w/tara. I'm sure a five minute session daily for a couple of weeks isn't going to make much of a difference, but now that you know, definately limit it to a couple times a week! Hope this helps!

if it makes you feel better I rented one at 14 weeks and used it almost everyday too. I am now almost 39 weeks and all is going well. It is true there is no evidence if the doppler is damaging to the fetus or not, but I guess we just have to cross our fingers and wait till the baby is born.

I also rented a fetal doppler since March and I used it quite alot in the beginning after my miscarriage in the late fall. I am talking ALOT of use... I have had 2 ultrasounds since then (due to AFP tests) and the baby is fine. He is very active etc. I did ask the Dr. at my last visit and he said they are perfectly fine. Now that I have strong movement at 27 weeks, I don't need to rely on it as much and will be sending it back. I too was very nervous that I was overdoing it, and have gotten by without using it for weeks at a time. You will too, once the baby starts to move. There will also come a point where your visits start to increase at the Dr's Office, and they will check there as well. Try not to worry too much and don't read too much over the internet. I did and drove myself crazy, but now I stick to this forums and skip all that stuff online. You don't know what to believe! Hopefully this helps anyone else out here as well!

Thanks ladies this helps out a lot.

Patty, I totally agree with you. Everything that I read is contravertial and so strict sometimes. I think common sense should be used since we all know that no 2 pregnancies are the same. Reading too much can drive you crazy which in it self is not good for the baby at all!

I DON'T THINK IF IT WERE HARMFUL PEOPLE WERE RENTING THEM OVIOSLY IF YOU RENT ONE OF THOSE YOU WILL BE USING IT OFTEN DON'T WORRIE BUT IF THERE COULD BE A WAY TO CHECK WITH THE DOCTOR GO AHEAD BUT U SHOULD BE JUST FINE.

I've called several different doppler companies, and they all say the same that it's not micro waves it's sound waves. They say it's safe to use every day, and that its regulated by the FDA. My dr just freaked me out. Maybe her doppler is micro waves, and the rented one is sound waves?
