Do Common Illnesses Affect The Baby

Hi I am 20 weeks pregnant and suffering with a really bad cold, which I think is perhaps the flu. Just wondered if anyone knew if these type of illnesses have any effect on the baby or is it just on me?

Hi Kay, first of all, congratulations! I've found this info online for you ... "During the course of your pregnancy, it is possible that you may catch a cold or flu virus. Because your immune system is affected during pregnancy, your symptoms may persist longer than usual. Nasal stuffiness is very common in pregnancy because of hormonal effects on the nasal pa__sages. If other cold symptoms are not present, you probably do not have a cold." .... There was no mention of any risk to the baby on that site, and others have said that your unborn baby is protected from common illnesses. The only ones I do know of that can effect the placenta, are diseases such as mumps, measles, german measles etc. Best wishes to you and the bump x

Hi Kay, I developed the flu at 28 weeks and was absolutely miserable. I suggest asking your doctor about using a cough suppressant, as I coughed so hard I started to bleed v____ally. It will be important for you to take extra precautions while ill. Make sure to use Tylenol if you are developing a fever. Hope you feel better.
