Does anyone know anything about this? I think it may cause birth defects but I am unable to find sufficient information on it. Has anyone else taken this antibiotic while pregnant. I took it before i knew I was pregnant to clear up an infection in my gums. also used to treat Acne and some s_xually transmitted diseases. I'm worried now!

Doxycycline is one of the tetracycline antibiotics. While a good broad spectrum drug, they are clearly contraindicated for pregnant and lactating women since they easily cross the placenta and into milk. One of their side effects in pregnant women is renal and hepatic failure; in the fetus or young child (<12 years) they can cause staining and deformity in both teeth and bones. Pregnant women should not take it in the first half of pregnancy. That being said, all this means is that these can be adverse effects from this drug, but it RARELY happens. The statistics are OVERWHELMINGLY on your side Check with your doctor. If you want resources, it's mentioned at the merk manual but the URL is long and this site mangles them up.
