http://www.marchofdimes.com/pnhec/173_769.asp ... says 400 micrograms in a multivitamin is good enough. In addition, the FDA requires certain multigrain bread and cereal to be fortified with folic acid, and green leafy veggies contain it naturally.

I have been trying to get pregnant and taking a multivitamin, but when I told my doctor he said we will put you on a prenatal vitamin cause it has everything you need. So I'm not sure what the other is missing.

Actually, if you check out the ingredients of prenatal vitamins they alot less in them than the regular multivitamin. Check the ingredients of your multivitamin. If there isn't any herbal ingredients in the base. You could take a multi and then just take a 1mg folic acid tablet. I take the "Expecting One" by Nu-Life. It has the highest vitamin amounts of all the prenatals I've seen. I also take 400 iu of vit E, 500 ui of vit c, 1 mg folic acid, 350 mg calcium/175 magnesium, and 1000 md of flax seed oil. My baby had strong neck muscles from birth and great skin. Doing the same with the next one.
