Folate Once Pregnant Do You Need To Stop After Some Time

Hi, we\ve found out we are pregnant, and we have been taking folate before hand. Now however, we are getting alot of 'help' from mainly older friends and family, which i am beginning to seriously doubt . Is there any reason to have to stop taking it at all? Can I also take it with Kass, as there also appear to be benefits for me too. Yep, and we'll ask this and a million other questions on our next doctors visit :) Thanks Jamie Kass

You need to take it for the first three months. Then start on other vitiams such as Materna for the next six and after if your b___stfeeding. Recommended by my doc.

Baby needs all those vits as well as your body. Congrats all the best. Folic Acid prevents a lot of birth defects.

Prior to conception and the first 3 months are most crucial. No there is no reason to stop taking it but it most beneficial during the first trimester as folate helps to prevent neural tube defects. After the first trimester all of this has formed. All prenatals contain folate, so if you are taking a folate supplement, it is ok to stop taking it. It is possible to get too much folate, but you have to be taking extremely high doses. You should consult your doctor for the best advise.

My advice would to take ahigh qualaity prenatal vitamin with 800 mcg folic acid and at least 28 of iron. If you take this, you should not need any other supplements unless prescribed by your dr. Takeit from before you conceive and at least to month 3 or 4 since that is when most of the crucial development occurs. hope that helps! Good luck and congrats!
