Frequency Of Doctors Visits

My husband & I would like to get pregnant this year, will be our first. Please forgive my ignorance, I know absolutely nothing about pregnancy, but hope to learn a lot from this forum. I assume after we start trying, I could take a pregnancy test "over the counter" type & if it comes back positive, when should I schedule a first doctors appt.? Then how frequent do I go back to the doctor? What types of tests will they do on these visits? We don't plan to know what s_x the baby will be, we want the surprise....so if there is a test for that, we would eliminate that. Any input you can give will be greatly appreciated. We currently don't have maternity coverage & I would like to get some idea of what it will cost to have a baby, so that I might could put back a little $$ here & there to cover expenses. Thank you in advance for your time.

When I found out I was pg I was 5 wks along. I called my Dr right away and he told me I have to take prenatal vitamins right away (either over the counter or the store brand would work) Once you find out your pg call your Dr right away so they can schedule your 1st prenatal appt.On my 1st prenatal care they took my weight, my blood, they did a pap-smear, ums...they gave you this questionare to fill out and then they will ask you bunch of questions like any history of diabetes in the family, high blood pressure, and any other symptoms. After that 1st visit your next appt wont be til after 4 wks. From 1st wk to 28 wks your appt schedule is every 4 wks then after 28th wks its every 2-3 wks depending of your situation if your in risk or they detect something is wrong or whatever then after 32 or 34 wks then its every wk. I hope that helps. Btw, on your 1st prenatal appt your Dr or clinic will you a book on pregnancy so that you keep your self informed and stuff. Good luck!

Before I forget, during your 20th wk thats usually the best time they will ask you to go in for your u/s and then you can let them know what you dont want to find out the s_x of your baby. What do you mean by maternity coverage? by work or you dont have insurance? or you dont have maternity leave option from your work?
