Gestational Diabetes

Hi I am 23 weeks pregnant and have been eating a lot of carbohydrate and surgary foods throughout my pregnancy so far. Will these increase my likelihood of developing gestational diabetes? Is there anything I can do to ensure I don't develop the condition?

Maisie, Congratulations, we're 23 weeks too! My wife had a glucose tolerance test yesterday, we're expecting results today....only she misunderstood the instructions and had a doughnut as well as that syrupy drink..LOL. She may have to re-test, we'll see. Of course, like in other types of diabetes family history, ethnicity, obecity, will play a much more significant role than your diet. Also a history of PolyCystic Ovarian Syndrome. As for prevention, to the best of my knowledge, nobody knows for sure, at least clinically. There is plenty of anecdotal evidence that proper nutrition has improved the odds. A blood sugar test is very simple, so if you're concerned please ask your doc to take it. Good luck!

My wife is 33 weeks and has GD. They really just monitor more closely when you have the condition, so it actually has been a blessing for us. Good luck with the test and the results. I am sure it will be okay!
