Hair Care Concerns Black Women

Hello. I am currently 23 and a half weeks pregnant and am debating whether or not to get a perm/relaxer. I was trying to go without one but my hair has reached an unmanageable point!!! I was wondering if there are any black woman who have gotten perms and what the outcomes were. Can the harsh chemicals effect the baby? I have heard conflicting stories. If you didnt get a perm/relaxer what did you do with your hair during the pregnancy? If you got it braided did you have a significant amount of hair loss after the birth? This question is geared towards black woman not to exclude anyone, just need specific answers that pertain to my ethnic makeup and perms for black hair are different than others. I hope no one is offended. Any advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

YC, Although i'm not a black woman, I just thought i'd tell you that my doctor gave me the thumbs up to have my hair highlighted in the 2nd trimester, which is the best time to get any chemical treatments done to your hair when you're pregnant. I would a__sume this info would apply to a perm/relaxer as well. Good luck to you!! :o)

Thanks tiffani! I see pregnant women getting chemical related things done in the shop all the time and I am pretty sure my hair dresser wouldnt take the risk if it was bad, just scared to walk out of there and have all my hair fall out ha!ha! p.s. 69 days to go...I can't wait to get there. I just looked it up and I have 115 to go. Good luck!

i'm black and my doc said that a perm or color would not effect the baby but that i shouldn't get one because of the hormones they may not take. i think braids are the best way to go!! good luck

YC~ You're not too far behind me. I started my countdown at 100, and it has flown by, I can't believe i'm already at 69. So you're due just intime for Christmas right? Sounds like you'll be getting the best gift of all this year. All the best ot you! :o)

Thanks for the info Marlene. I hate sitting there for hours to get braided but it sounds like that is my best bet. Hi Tiffani, yes, I am due Dec. 17th. Can't wait!!! Good luck to you also!

The only advice I have is that at about 3-5 months postpartum, you hair starts to fall out in large quant_ties due to the hormonal changes. I do not know if a perm would weaken the structure of the hair to the point that more would fall out than normal. You may want to ask the stylist about that. Your hair may be very strong already, and this might not apply to you :)

For me Ijust decided not to do any perms because the evidence was inconclusive. Some of the studies said only small amounts were absorbed through the skin, but I do not think they were testing black hair care products. So I took that with a grain of salt. Also, some of my friends who couldn't live w/o perms got them and found that they didn't take very well. I went the braid route too, good thing was that my hair was so healthy and long afterwards. Just don't have them do the hair at the temple, if you get the extentions. I still don't have much hair there from the weight of the braids that were put there and it's almost been a year!

One more thing, take a pregnancy safe pain reliever before you start, snacks, books, water or whatever you might need. It will help the time pa__s more quickly.

Hi, I wore braids. Braids are just pain easier during your last months and when you are in the hospital. You don't have to worry about if your hair is combed when people are in and out of your home during postpartum time(you will likely lose hair). You have to keep the braids clean and conditioned or they will take your hair out on the sides. You down want bald spots. Make sure you get touch ups. Braids help to keep your hair heathy when they are taken care of. Braids are very pricey. thank God, my sister and I do my hair for free. Good luck

Hey YC Im am black and I currently get perms. I just get the regular strength. I dont have a problem with my perms not taking at all. The only problem is just that now that my hair is growing, I need perms quicker. But I dont get them any quicker because I dont want to overprocess my hair. I was getting perms every 4 weeks, now its every 5-6 weeks. My hair is doing great. Its just a lot fuller and it has grown so much. I cant get braids because my hair texture is soft, so that might break my hair out, especially on the sides. But I heard that if you go without getting a perm once you've started, your hair can shed or start coming out(probably because of the nappiness!) But good luck. I'm due December 14th, when are you due??

Thanks KEEKEE. Luckily my boyfriends aunts braid hair (really really well I might add). I know that hair loss is common after the baby with or without braids. Its obviously not my biggest concern in delivery but I dont want to look a mess in pictures and all. This stuff is so think these days that I wouldnt be able to just throw it up in a ponytail ha!ha! Firsttimemama thanks for the advice. I am going in to talk to my stylist today. I am due Dec 17th (well the 15-17th the ultrasound tech and the doctor can not seem to agree on a date :). Good luck to you. Do you know what you are having? I am having a girl. Have you gone to your 24 week appointment? What do they do? Ok I am way off the subject so I guess I better stop with the questions ha!ha! have a great day ladies!

I am having a BOY and he is exactly what I wanted. I am actually 24 weeks today, but wont go the the doc until Aug29th. I know that sometime soon, we should be expecting that diabetes test, I heard that the liquid that they make you drink is awful!! I am really anxious, I'm so ready to meet him. We decided to name him Joshua. He is so active. I love to feel his kicks and movement.(not sure if I'll feel this way later though)Right now I'm getting ready for my shower! What did you decide to name you little girl?? Where are you located?

YC - August 24

Hi firsttimemama...congrats on baby Joshua. I have had the 1 hour sugar test twice already at 5 weeks and again at about 16 weeks. The liquid tasted like Sprite with about a pound of sugar poured in it. I felt so sick afterwards but it only lasted a few hours. We haven't decided on a name yet. My boyfriend has a few he really like but we can't think of cute nickmaes to go with them. Oh well, we have a while. I can't wait. She is active on ultrasounds but I dont feel much yet (I have some extra fluffiness so the doctor says it will take a little longer to feel her move). I am in California. Where are you? When are you having your shower? We decided on October 22nd.

firsttimemomma - August 24

Yeah..I dont know if I'll be able to not eat from midnight to the time of the test, I will probably pa__s out :0) I havent thought of any cute nick names for Josh yet..His name sounds so serious and formal, we just have to have something goofy to call him. I am located in Louisiana and its like hell on Earth. The temp was 102 yesterday. This heat reminds me of my pregnant belly everyday because its just too hot. My shower is set for Oct 8. That way, we'll have enought time to get everything that we didnt get at the shower, before he's born. We plan on having it at a nice/upscale resturant (we wont have to worry about cleaning afterwards). Its going to be pretty small maybe about 15-20 people.

YC - August 24

Joshua is so cute. I am sure you will think of a cute nickname. My shower is getting out of control. This is the first grandbaby on my boyfriends side and his family is huge. I cant wait to have all of our family together. Here in Cali it has been warm (about 102) but hsa cooled down to the low 90's for about the last week. Since we are due around the same time I would love to keep in contact. My e-mail address is [email protected] I have my 24 week appointment on Friday. Woohoo!

firsttimemomma - August 24

Ok thats cool, my email is [email protected] I'll add you to my IM. This is the first grandchild for my boyfriends side of the family also! So I know what you mean....
