No, ultrasounds are touted as completely safe; however they are still a "young" technology, so nobody knows for sure. Marie Curie died from x-ray induced leukemia because at the time x-rays were thought to be completely safe. That being said, studies in humans have never shown any adverse effects from U/S, but studies on monkeys have. Those did not include ear infections but low birth weight and developmental problems. Keep in mind that those monkeys were exposed to 10 minute ultrasounds several times a week though. To answer your question, we simply don't know. We do know that sound wave energy affects human tissue, but we don’t know how exactly and since the U/S technology changes so fast long term studies cannot keep up. The question becomes then how many scans is too many, and I don't think anyone has enough data to answer that. Despite the downside, U/S remains a great prenatal care tool.
