is it ok to eat hot dogs while pregnant?

To Erika - March 24

why wouldn't it be?

Heidi - March 24

I did. Just make sure you cook them good. Other women on this post have talked about eating them too. I went a whole week on a chili dog kick! Just don't eat them raw.

thanks.... I have read on other sites to avoid cold cuts and hot dogs. I was craving one for lunch...

as long as the hot dog is cooked it's okay to have. The same goes for the cold cuts.

Hot dogs have been implicated in several studies for being cancerogenic. They contain nitrates which should be avoided during pregnancy. You can obtain nitrate-free hot dogs, they taste the same but their color is darker and less appetizing.

better be on the safe side i guess.... a burrito for lunch today :)

Heidi - March 24

But the nitrates make them taste soooo good! I think everything causes cancer these days. Before ya know it, they'll say, oh yeah, your microwave causes cancer! I'm just waiting for that one. Or maybe the wrapper the hot dogs comes in causes cancer.....????

Heidi, I agree with you to some extend, you can't go too crazy.... but just because you can't go crazy, for me at least it doesn't mean you should do absolutely nothing either. Hot dogs have a mult_tude of problems. If you saw the raw materials going in, or their natural color, you would not want to have them. They are some of the most processed foods you can find. I suppose it depends on your caution level and your philosophy in general, but if you are generally careful about what you eat, deli meats and hot dogs should be on the bottom of the food chain.

I agree with ya, but sometimes they're just sooo good! I love the ones with cheese in em. And they're probably the worst. Usually we buy the skin on kind, the more natural ones.

well I ended up having a chicken lemon sausage....low fat and salt. it was very good.

Well, my wife is on a Dunkin Donuts, "bavarian-cream" kick. After her blood sugar came out clean she took it as a go-ahead and have a couple a day LOL...... can't be that good for you either, but she eats well otherwise so I'll let it slide. Seems like you women get a sweet tooth as well while pregnant!

erika - March 24

true with the sweet tooth.... I need chocolate everyday. but yesterday my sugar came back a little high.. so more chocolate, cookies...etc for me. :(

BBK - March 24

Erika, are you going to have a followup test? It may come back clean then. Still you probably want to avoid sweets.

HEY AS LONG AS YOUR NOT EATING BOOGERS LIKE ANOTHER WOMEN ON THIS SITE YOULL BE FINE

Erin - March 24

I have read that they are not safe during pregnancy, mainly due to the nitrates. Cold cuts are not safe either. Of course I have friends who ate both and were fine but I also know of someone who was not after eating cold cuts from a salad bar. She was in her third trimester and lost her baby. If you are going to eat them, just play it safe and make sure they haven't been sitting out (cold cuts) all day or are cooked thoroughly (hot dogs).
