How Common Is It To See A White Spot On Ultrasound

17 weeks and saw a white spot on the heart during my ultrasound yesterday. The doctor said it was a strong healthy heart but naturally said it could be a sign of downs syndrome. But there were no other makers to show this, everything else was perfect. Went for the triple screen same day. Was just wondering how often this spot shows up on sonograms? I've heard that its quite a common thing to see. I'm 25 yrs old. Thanks.

Hi Shanna, it is called an Echogenic foci spot. And believe me I started a thread on it back in May. I had an abnormal AFP test and showed no major markers for downs except that spot, so I am right with you. I am 37 yrs old and the spot is still there, but the baby apears fine. I did not opt for Amnio. Honestly this is becomming very very common, if you look around you will see posts on Down Syndrome, Ultrasounds etc. with this very concern mentioned. I think you should be fine and hope you can take some rest a__surance in that.... :)

did you get the results back from you AFP test yet? the chances of you having a baby with downs syndrome are very low since you are so young (I'm 24 and was worried too though) and if your husband is young too, that helps. But the best way to know is to find out the results of the AFP test. They aren't 100% - and if you can handle an amnio, it will tell you with much greater accuracy (and you'll find out the s_x of the baby!). Good luck and it sounds like you shouldn't worry too much.
