How harmfuI is the use of hot tubs during early pregnancy and how common are the effects? I used a hot tub 3 times while on vacation (2-10 after conception) before I was aware I was even pregnant. Now I'm terrified I may have caused damage / defects to the baby.

Because it was so soon after conception it would be rare for it to cause any damage. You probably hadn't even impanted yet.. after implantation is when you need to be very careful that is when the baby actually starts to get what you put into your body and actually becomes "part" of you. I'm sure you'll be o.k. Double check with your doctor & he'll probably say the same thing. Congratulations!

I tried to sit in one for a short time during my first trimester to soothe the achy muscles. It made me extremely nautious and lightheaded, so I got right out. I think my body was just protecting the baby. Not sure if it is the heat or the forced air that is harmful to baby. I have read both.

I would not worry. There are many things we do before we are aware we are pregnant. Our bodies are made to protect our babies from harm (God's wonderful design) I drank the weekend before I found out I was pregnant. I question my doc and he said everything was fine and naturally stay away from alcohol from now on. All the best to you and yours.

We have a hottub and I went in it a lot when I was first pregnant. ( I didn't know I was pregnant for two and a half months) My doctor told me as long as I didn't stay in to the point where I was uncomfortably hot I should be alright. He even told me I could go in it for 5 minutes at a low temp. to ease my back.
