Is Cerebral Palsy Hereditary

My cousin was born with severe cerebral palsy, and one of my sisters had a mild case of it when she was born. Do you know if CP is a family trait, or is it caused by something else?

Nope - it isn't hereditary. I don't think they know the exact cause of it, but I know it has two possibles: one being a brain malformation that formed during growth in the womb and two being doctor error ie., delayed delivery or delivery mistakes. In my husband's cousin's case - it was delayed delivery. She had low fluid and the baby had no room to continue growth. The doctor told her it would be fine, but did not induce labor for another 5 weeks. Her son was born with CP. It was proved that he was at fault. Hope this calms your fears a little.

mcatherine is right Cerebral Palsey is not genetic, it is caused by malformation, injury or damage to the developing brain, such as lack of oxygen, bleeding into the brain, or an infection.
