Possible Pregnancy

Hello. I have a question that no one can seem to answer for me, so I thought I try a forum. I began my period on Sept. 3rd and everything was very normal. I had s_x late on Sept 4th and on Sept 5th my period became VERY light and by the evening stopped all together. To top it off I was taken to the emergency room for vertigo on the same evening. My periods are usually VERY regular. 5 days like clockwork. This has never happened to me before and I am wondering if I could possibly be pregnant. Doctor says its too early for any tests to pick up a result so thats not an option for another week and a half---as many of you probably understand.....I'd like answers earlier than that! Anyone think they can help? Thanks so much!

I forgot a few things. I did take a pregnancy test on 9/5 so its not possible that its implantation bleeding or anything like that....thats what I thought at first. And I would like to stress that in the 14 years that I have been getting periods....this has NEVER happened! Thanks for any insight!

I Googled ... pregnancy vertigo ... and came up with this hit that will help you ... http://www.columbus-online.co.uk/msboard/59.html ...S_x on September 4th would have nothing to do with a pregancy that produced symptoms on the 5th. A pregnancy test on the 5th would not show any pregnancy from conception in the previous 7 days, and might not show positive from a conception 14 days previous. If you are pregnant and the Sept 3rd period was at a normal time, I would suspect intercourse between August 14th and 20th was responsible. The light "period" would have been the bleeding that sometimes occurs at period time during the first few months of a pregnancy. I suggest you wait to see if you develop more symptoms of pregnancy like sensitive b___sts, fatigue, nausea, creamy v____al discharge, gas, constipation, back ache etc. If several of these symptoms appear soon, I would wait a week and then take another pregnancy test. Hope this helps. Let us know how it turns out.

Hi Viv, thanks for the input. I'm beginning to think that the vertigo was perhaps due to a sinus or ear infection and the two problems are unrelated. Unless, like you said, the syptoms are related to a pregnancy from a couple of weeks ago that is still too early to show up on the test I took on the 6th, I'm not sure whats going on. I'm not experiencing any other symptoms, but its hard to imagine what else would have caused my period to just stop so suddenly? Does anyone know if an egg is fertilized during a period what exactly would happen? Would it just stop like that? Guess I'll have to just keep waiting :(

Lynn, you need to read up on the reproductive cycle. There is a strict rotation of events, and having a viable egg present during menstruation is not one of the possibilities. After fertilization the egg is on its travels from ovary to uterus for 7 to 10 days, and is not in a position to create symptoms until implantation.

Well, I have been reading up on the reproductive cycle and talking to my doctor who a__sures me that while it is unlikely, it is absolutely a possibility to become pregnant during your period and/or have an egg fertilized during a period. Which is why my question is "if that occurred, would my period stop" I understand that I would not be experiencing symptoms now...thats why I can't take a test and why I am asking folks here their opinions.

OK. The wording here has to be precise. "It is possible to become pregnant by having s_x during you period". I think this is what the doc intended to convey. The way this happens is that sperm survives in your reproductive tract long enough to wait for the next egg to come down. I have never seen any reference to a viable egg being present during the period. For instance, if your period lasted 7 days, you had s_x on the last day, the sperm lasts for 5 days, and an egg comes down on day 11, which is not at all impossible then the sperm have a chance of fertilizing that egg. It will implant around day 20 and you will miss a period on day 25. I suppose it depends some on how you define "get pregnant". Is it the first day of the last period, the day sperm gets in you, the day sperm enters the egg, the day of implantation or the day you miss a period. Doctors initially calculate "due date" by adding 280 to the date of the last period, which might lead them to think of that as the date you "got pregnant". Take a look at the page I am working on at http://www.ppowb.org/fertility.htm

OK. So the question really should be--was it possible for an egg to be viable at the time that I had s_x which was the second day of my period? And it looks like the answer is "highly unlikely". Unless for whatever reason my ovulation was completely abnormal? Don't really know. Guess we'll find out in a couple of weeks :)
