Does anybody else have 0 negative blood and if so is your doctor making you do Rhogam shots. I am 24 weeks and my doctor is prescribing it for me starting at 28 weeks.

Have you heard of any side effects because of it?

anita - November 7

no, i didn't think to ask about side effects of the shot. i just know that not having it can hurt our chances of having successful pregnancies in the future. they say that if the baby has positive blood and it mixes w/ ours, then our bodies might develop antibodies against any other baby we might have w' positive blood ( theres an 85% chance of that) and treat the baby as an foreign envader and try to get rid of it. if the baby has negative blood there's nothing to worry about. if you find out about any bad side effects of the shot please post and let me know. i'm 21 wks, so i haven't had it yet. good luck.

Thanks, I will let you know if I here anything. I will receive my first shot in about 4 weeks. My doctor said it is between $500-$700 each, insurance should cover it but she said sometimes they have to work with them. But for people like us it is not an option, we have to have it.

I'm A -. I had my first Rhogam shot at 7 wks as I was bleeding. I'll now get my 2nd at 28 weeks and then another when the baby is born. I had no side effects to the shot. They did make me wait 1/2 hour before I could go home to see though. Guess you can get headaches and kind of sick from it but it's rare. And yes, my insurance covered it.

Have you heard of any side effects to the baby?

None - it just prevents you from treating the baby as a foreign object. If you know your DH's blood type and he's negative as well, then you don't have to have the shots.

Im curious about this topic too. Im O- but I was told that I only need a shot after the birth. Is this information wrong? And $700 for a shot thats unbelievable glad I dont live in the states id be broke. Think in nz the government pays well I hope so anyway.
