Seriously Freaked Out

OK - so I am having a hormonal freak out day. I have come to the conclusion that I know nothing about babies - when to feed, how much to feed, do they sleep on their stomach or back, how long do they get held because some say to hold them too much would be to "spoil" them - this is my first baby and I am 4 months along. I know i have time to learn about this stuff, but I am wondering if I should have waited longer so I knew all this stuff before I became pregnant. This was a planned pregnancy so it's not like an "oops" and I thought I was ready but now I am wondering all these things and I stress because it just seems like women i see with little babies know just what to do and i haven't the foggiest idea of what to do (though I will say I know how to mix formula and change a diaper, but the first time moms must know what i mean by all of this jabbering). I just want to make sure that i am prepared for my little one when it comes - i want to know how warm the formula should be, how often they usually take the br___t as I plan to br___tfeed, how do you br___tfeed, as well as the other questions I asked. I know it's alot but I am totally freaked about this today - I can't stop thinking that I am 4 months pregnant and already an unfit mother.......HELP!

I'm 3 months along and have no idea on ANYTHING. I am hoping some reading and natural instinct would help when the baby gets here. Or my Mom/MIL/friends/pediatrician/family doctor can pitch in an advice or two.

A lot of it has to do with natural mother instinct. I'm also a first time mom-to-be but I helped my mom raise my little sister right after I graduated high school. I remember feeding her about 6 onces of formula just about every two hours or so. She always slept on her back, but we had to make sure to burp her right after she ate and keep her awake for awhile before we put her down to sleep in case she vomited. It's a good idea to buy the baby monitors and carry it with you everywhere. It was impossible not to hold her for long periods of time because she was so precious and I had waited 17 years for a sister, but I think it is true that babies should not be held too long. I imagine it would be difficult for them to sleep in their crib without needing to be held otherwise. Now that I'm going to be a mom myself I tell myself that I have nothing to worry about because I had practice with my sister, but it's different when it's your own child who's involved. I have a feeling I will bend some of the rules (Holding him too long)!! Good luck, Missy and don't worry too much. Like I said, your mother instinct will kick in as soon as you have your baby in your arms. I'm sure you'll do just great!!

It's my first time too and I'm equally freaked out. I think exactly the same thing when I look at other mums with new babies. How do they know?! I don't even know how to mix formula, so you've got one thing up on me! :-) As for how often they should feed, I'm guessing the baby will tell me that. It's also generally accepted now that babies should be put to sleep on their backs, because of the link between cot deaths and babies sleeping on their stomachs. As for everything else, I'm as clueless as you. What I'm most dreading is taking my baby out shopping and having strangers staring at me because I'm doing it all wrong. What if I can't find a place to feed it (hoping to b___st feed) and the baby is screaming at me to be fed?! Some people are really nasty about mothers wanting to b___stfeed in public places. Missy I totally understand you!! I have been the same since once of my friends had a baby like 4 days ago l went to the hospital to visit her, I saw that they were measuring how much milk to give the little baby, then they were telling me how often you should feed the baby, i thought it was every time they cried! also about putting them to sleep in different post_tions so their little head won't get flat in the back!! can you believe that?!? and then not to touch at all their little umbilical cord. and another thing I am really scared about is bathing the baby!!! When I came out of the hospital room I was like S***T I KNOW NOTHING!!! so don't worry I think is very normal to feel like this for first time mommy's

Damn. Now I'm freaked out, too! And the reward of being pregnant is...? Just kidding. But I AM freaked out *lol.

I'm trying not to think about so many things! This is one of them! I'm really hoping the natural instinct thing is real. What really baffles me is, when the baby screams/cries/wimpers etc, how on earth do you know what they want?

Boobs - April 14

That one's easy...yeah, right! haha-- ok, my guesses you can try one of the following: give it your nipple, sniff the bum, check if it's sweating or freezing, and all this time rocking it back and forth in your arms. Surely one of those should help! ( I hope) haha.

Oh missy, join the club, although I was 16 when my mom had my baby sis. I still have a lot to learn. My mom said to me that it comes natural. I am going to have a lot of help my mom and mom in law will be there so I am not that freaked out. I am also (in my third trimester) purchase a book (Step by step the first years) or something like that I will get the right name for you. But mostly I think it comes natural. Mothers instint. Sometimes too much advise is just as bad as done. We gonna be all right. God has intrusted us with these precious ones and he will tell us how to care for them. LOL

missy if you are due in oct 2nd and that is also what my dr told me...but you are already 4 months and they tell me I am only 3 mths 2 weeks..? ?I don't understand...

Missy - April 14

First of all, nice to know I am not the only nutcase out there!! Leslie - On sunday I will be exactly 4 months - 16 weeks. My conception date was 1/9/05, LMP (last period) was 12/26/04. Has your doctor changed your due date again? I could've sworn your due date was 10/5...Hmmm, I must be confused. Anyway, it's really nice to have someone with the same due date as I am - Karen also shared the date of 10/2 with us! And by the way, I hadn't even thought of bathing the baby...oh geez. when will it all come to me so I can just relax and enjoy being a mommy????

Karen - April 14

Missy, unbelievable every date you have is mine excat. My last period to conception ( Which I estimated to be between the 7 and 9 of Jan) WOW.Just WOW.

Lucky us - April 14

Part of why God gave us 9 months in the womb is for the mother too... that way she has time to adjust to the idea that she's having a baby and to prepare. If you feel like you don't know enough...there are plenty of ppl who would love to give you information, plus plenty of books written on it. :)

Missy - April 14

Karen - how funny that we are so far away from eachother yet we managed to get "knocked up" at exactly the same time! LOL....I estimate my conception date to be between the 6 - 9 from what I have seen on the online calculators. To Lucky us - I have read three books already, but I never know what to beleive....I think it's that I am starting to show now, in less than a month I will know (hopefully) if it's a boy or girl and it all is really starting to sink it - I am going to be someone's mother. I want to be a good mom, I don't want to make the bottle to hot or cold or feed too often or not enough - it's just so much to know - it's amazing how much goes into being a mom and sometimes I just feel sorta overwhelmed, like Oh my god, what if I screw it up - it's not like that goldfish I had last year.....Notice I say HAD - I killed it in a day - sue me, it kept looking at me with hungry eyes....**SIGH** I just want to be a good mom. Any book recommendations???

Karen - April 14

Dont feel bad bout the fish I cant keep pets either. Actually my sister's dog just had some puppies, so we have adopted one. So we will have two babies in the family. HA. Right now I am reading what to expect when expecting. I also saw a book with that t_tle for the first year and another book with a different t_tle ( get the name later). Yea looks like we were very active in January. I suspect the 7th cause he had just come make from a trip (away from me 3 weeks) so there was a lot of making up for lost time. BOY DID WE !!!!!(OBVIOUSLY). LOL

nicole - April 14

even the most prepared people can know what to expect from their first baby.

leslie - April 14

Missy, where exactly is your bf from? I may know the place...
