So, what are we allowed for maternity leave? I work for a small office, where right now I am the only employee. My boss has guaranteed my job and all, but I don't think I will get paid. How much time will State Disability pay? And what about insurance for the baby? I am only 20, I am still under my dad's policy. My boyfriend doesn't have health insurance. What do I do for the baby? Let me know, thanks!!

I believe that your job is protected for 12 weeks, which includes 6 weeks for bonding once the baby is born for which you are ent_tled to a portion of your pay (I think it's 60%). I also believe that you can use disability if you need to go out on bed rest early. I actually haven't looked into it much yet beacuase I am still so early. I believe that my company gives me 8 weeks paid and then I'll be taking another 4 weeks of leave that will be paid at 60%, or whatever the portion of pay is. I have heard that jobs are protected for 12 months but it seems as if you already have that covered. I wish that I could be more helpful at this time. I'll probably have some more info. in my 2nd trimester because once I tell people and my company, I'll be able to get the whole scoop. There's probably some good websites on that as well. I really don't have too much information on State Disability but I believe that you will be able to get a good amount of time off. As for insurance for the baby, you would have to purchase insurance or go to a state plan but, unfortunately, they will not allow you to add the baby to your current insurance with you dad.

Kim, thanks for the info. I have looked into the Family Medical Leave Act and my employer does not qualify for that program - you must have 50 employees. Luckily, I work for an attorney so I know plenty of people that I could talk to later, but like you I don't want to say much until I am into my second trimester - only a few more weeks now (yay!). Thanks again for the reply...where are you at in California? I am in southern california, in orange county to be more specific.

Missy, I live in So. Cal as well, in Temecula. I've only been out here for less than two years (from NJ) and this is my first so I am learning all about leave myself. I work in sales covering 4 counties out here and a girl on my team just had a baby and so I am going by what she received in terms of time off. My neighbor works in HR and knows all of the state policies. I can find out more from her once I tell her in another month or so. When you are you due? I am estimating that I am due around 10/30 and so I am in my 7th week now. So excited but so nervous....

Kim, I am due 10/2 - not too far ahead of you. How are you feeling??

Missy, I have been feeling okay, actually. My b___bs are sore but that comes and goes. I have been rather moody and have started having acne like I never had before but that is about it. I guess that I am a little lightheaded, too. I don't have my first appt. until 03/25 and I just hope that everything is okay! I can't wait! How about you?
