Too Many Questions

ok.... so I have already asked a few questions and had some great responses. (thanks guys) but I have so many questions i would like peoples opinions on! My first question is with regards to folic acid. I have had genetic counselling as my nephew has a genetic disorder. The counseller recommended that i take an increased dose of folic acid and not the normal dose. I also found out through reading my hospital notes (which i sneakily done whilst waiting for laser surgery a few years ago) that i have spina bifida occulta and was I was never told about! According to my notes this was discovered after i had an x-ray at age 13 because i had painful 'clicky hips'. I asked my dr about this and she said it is insignificant! how can it be!? anyway i am trying to conceive and am taking the normal dose of folic acid as I do not want to take a higher dose as i am unsure of the effects. The genetic counseller sent me for a back x-ray when i told him about the spina biffida occulta but the x-ray was taken at the wrong angle(can you believe it!) so i never went back for another one. stupid i know but i really felt they were messimg me around and i would let nature take its course. I would like to hear from anyone that has taken a higher dose of folic acid and what the effects are and if anyone else has been diagnosed with spina bifida occulta. Also i am due for my period this weekend and am not sure if this month has been 'the month' i have conceived? This morning i had a huge amount of discharge, nothing nasty just a normal discharge but lots of it and I wondered if this is a possible symptom of early pregnancy? Sorry that this is a long post but any comments and responses will be much appreciated!

Hello, I had a lady I worked w/ that had 2 children one that pa__sed away and another that lived but had sb. She got preg the 3rd time and I am almost 100% sure that they upped her folic acid intake. I remember her telling me when I got preg to make sure I ate a lot of green veggies. Anyways her 3rd child turned out to be just fine. I think you ought to ask your doc about upping it and just really try to eat a lot of food rich in folic acid...I have been told it is better to get the nutrients and vitamins directly from their natural source than through a pill. Take your prentals and eat greens...that would be advice...I hope it all works out for you but it is really important to eat those folic acids! Good luck to you!!!!

Thanks again (you seem to be my agony aunt for today) lol. You are right, I think i will ask my doc about upping my folic acid (thats if i am not already pregnant this month) but then it wouldnt hurt to up my dose even if i am already pg. I have so many worries about pregnancy and even just getting pregnant at the moment i am sure it is not helping the process along! I think i need a good long chat with my dr and get it all off my chest.

man I did not even know it was you I was responding to again LOL! Yes talk to your doc...I know friends that took extra folic before they got preg too. I had to have that gentic testing done with my second child..(the one I had after my surgery) My afp came back bad and leaned towards sb. It was ok I was sure worried though. I know or I have noticed people sometimes try too hard to get pregnant. Just try to relax..that seems to make pregnancy easier or from what I have noticed. I Have a wonderful doc who explains every single little thing to me and it my vocab and not doc talk! It helps to have a wonderful doctor. IF you can not communicate with your doc it might be best if you could find another one that you can talk with. I just got lucky I guess with mine! I had a ton of complications through both of my pregnancies. including toxciema and my uterus trying to fall out lol it was not fun I was miserable anyways I learned a lot during those times and it seems my friends and family always come to me asking bizarre questions. I wish you the best! Just remember don't try too hard lol that is kinda hard to do I know! I hope you are preg now that way you could move on down the road with excitement and happiness...just keep your chin up
