Tweeking Nipples To Jump Start Labor

I've been reading about the various things you can do to get labor going, like Raspberry Leaf Tea, Sex, Walking etc, but the weirdest thing I found, was that tweaking the nipples several hours per day can help to ripen the cervix and speed things up! They say you should only massage one at a time, because massaging both has been shown to cause fetal distress. Has anyone tried this, and do you think it worked for you?

I would avoid it because although I have heard it does work, apparently when it does it tends to cause long, painful contractions.

Some physicians don't like it just because it CAN cause fetal distress. What worked really well for us was s_x..... went from 0% effacement and no dilation to have the baby 36 hours later.....but none of this will work if your body and your baby are not ready.

I have never heard of fetal distress from nipple situation. :-O Please provide more info if you know about this topic. Does this mean that nipple situation during foreplay could cause the baby distress?...how harmful is this "distress" to the baby?... is it only distressful after a certain point in pregnancy?

I was wondering this too, because it's my husband's hobby, to sit and squeeze both of them whenever he gets the chance (keeps trying to milk me!). I won't let him do it, now since I read this. They say you should spend 15 minutes on 1 and then switch, but that's all I know.

The uterus can become overstimulated, and have too many contractions. This can cause the baby to receive less oxygen, resulting in fetal heart rate speeding and slowing. I've tried to find a non-subscription article on the internet, but I can't. It should certainly be done under supervision.

OK, go to this URL http://snipurl.com/gqsj Scroll down to "nipple stimulation". Second paragraph. If I have time, I'll get more.

Thanks for that site BBK. I'm definitely not going to try it after reading that. I'll just stick with the tea.

I considered this when I was pregnant with my first, but I read that it takes a really long time (hours) before the contractions start. Seems like too much work and irritiation to me. :o)

Becca if you do try it, talk to your doctor first. I did not know (or imagine) of the nipple-uterus connection till my wife started b___stfeeding shortly after birth. It caused her significant uterine contractions, at the time It was probably for a good reason as it helped the uterus recover and expel all the extra blood quicker. It was painful but she recovered quickly! By the end of next day the contractions had stopped, and the bleeding diminished. TMI? Well, you maybe faced with this soon so I thought you'd want to know.

Interesting...to say the least. Supervision?...now there's a thought... :S

~E~ never thought of the funny side of it.... I guess it would be odd to say to your doc "I'll play with my nipples, can you just keep an eye on me? Thanks!" ROTFLMAO

BBK, I am at work and I can't stop laughing. I have to admit I wonder sometimes how you can talk about such serious things w/out a smirk (or so it seams)... but then again I guess I am goofy...I was cracking up so many times during Lamaze cla__s. Pregnancy is one of those things that is soo serious...but at the same, there are so many things that are just comical about it.

Just read ~E~'s post about supervision! LMAO! I can't get that image out of my head now. :-D
